    A swan has been killed after being shot with an air rifle at a West Yorkshire nature reserve.

    The police have tweeted about this shocking incident at the Fairburn Ings reserve, near Castleford, which happened earlier this week:

    Swans, like all native wild birds, are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to intentionally injure, take or kill a wild swan.

    Three of the four lanes on the northbound side of the M1 remain closed this morning on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border following a multi-vehicle accident just before 06:00.

    I'm currently on a bridge over the M1 near junction 30 (Sheffield south) and although traffic here is moving again at full speed, three lanes remain cordoned-off by the emergency services from junction 29 (Chesterfield) towards me here at junction 30.

    According to traffic sensors, the northbound delays begin at junction 28 for Alfreton and callers to BBC Radio Sheffield say they're experiencing an extra 90 minutes on their usual journey times.

    A new report released today outlines how the proposed HS2 high speed rail link is expected to boost the economy outside of London.

    People will commute more to places like Leeds and Sheffield due to cheaper office space and lower wages for staff, according to the report by HS2 Ltd, external.

    Speaking to Toby Foster on BBC Radio Sheffield this morning, David Higgins, chairman of HS2, says once the scheme arrives in the North, a lot of firms will relocate to Yorkshire from the capital:

    As the the first day of December beckons, Christmas trees will be going up in living rooms across West Yorkshire.

    But Halifax is going one step further, with a festival of Christmas trees being held at the town's minster.

    To signify the start of its festive celebrations, over 30 trees have been sponsored and decorated by local organisations and are filling the historic space.

    There were "no life-threatening or serious injuries" following this morning's multi-vehicle accident on the northbound M1 just before 06:00 this morning, according to Highways England.

    Three of the four lanes remain closed on that carriageway from junction 29 (Chesterfield) to junction 30 (Sheffield south), with delays beginning at junction 28 (Alfreton in Derbyshire).

    It's very wintry on the east coast this morning, with Scaborough, Filey and the North York Moors all getting quite a bit of snow overnight.

  10. Child abuse inquiry: Boy 'abused' by head of Catholic schoolpublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2017

    A head teacher of a Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire invited a young pupil into his study and then sexually abused him, the inquiry into child abuse has heard.

    The hearing heard the boy was told to pretend to go to bed in his dorm at Ampleforth College and then to get up and go to his study.

    Two other ex-pupils also talked about being abused and beaten at the school.

    The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is currently examining abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.

    Shocking pictures from a pile-up on the M1 that's closed part of the northbound carriageway this morning.

    A vehicle collided with a broken-down lorry at about 05:50 this morning, followed by several other crashes on the same stretch between junctions 29A (Chesterfield) and 30 (Sheffield south).

    Thankfully there have been no life-threatening or serious injuries, according to Derbyshire Police.

  12. Three lanes remain closed on M1 after accidentpublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2017

    The M1 has re-opened northbound following a multi-vehicle accident earlier this morning which completely closed the carriageway from junction 29 (Chesterfield) to junction 30 (Sheffield south).

    One of the lanes was opened to traffic at about 08:00, but the remaining three lanes are still cordoned off by the emergency services while the scene is cleared.

    Delays in that stretch begin at junction 28, which is the exit for Alfreton in Derbyshire, and callers to BBC Radio Sheffield say it's taking an extra hour to get through the congestion.

    A jogger was knocked over and left unconscious with a serious back injury after a hit-and-run in a village near Huddersfield.

    The 31-year-old woman was jogging along Green Side Road in Thurstonland at about 07:00 on Tuesday morning when she was hit by a vehicle which then drove off.

    The woman lost consciousness after being hit by the car and had to be taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment for a serious back injury.

    There's no description of the vehicle which hit her and West Yorkshire Police are appealing for the driver to come forward.

    The snow continues to cause problems in parts of North Yorkshire.

    The headteacher at Goathland Primary School tells us it will be closed to staff and pupils today due to the weather.

    A reminder that Springfield Special School in Scarborough is also closed to pupils - but staff are asked to go in if they can get there.

  17. 'No surprise' it's hard in Premier League - Terriers bosspublished at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2017

    Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner says the Terriers "can still be satisfied" with the club's position in the Premier League, despite suffering their heaviest defeat of the season so far last night.

    Town were thumped 5-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates, going behind after just three minutes and then conceding three goals in four second half minutes.

    Huddersfield are now 14th in the Premier League, still five points above the relegation zone.

    Wagner says: "It isn't a surprise it is getting difficult in the Premier League, it was difficult from the beginning.

    "I think we can still be satisfied with the position we are in at the moment. To lose against Arsenal as Huddersfield Town away from home, it isn't a surprise."

    Two lanes are currently blocked and there's queueing traffic due to an accident on the M62 eastbound between J23 A640/A643 (Huddersfield) and J24 A629 (Ainley Top).

    Two vans and a car are involved in the accident. Drivers are being warned to avoid the area if possible.

    The wintry weather is causing a few problems on the roads this morning on the North Yorkshire coast and inland.

    The A64 Seamer Road is currently partially blocked, with queueing traffic due to ice and an accident involving a lorry near Valley Road (St James Church Traffic Lights).

    Snow's also causing hazardous conditions on the A171 High Street, in both directions, in Cloughton, around Station Lane

    And there's also congestion on the A171 Robin Hood's Bay Road to the B1416 and on the A171 Scalby Road to the A170 Stepney Road.

    Meanwhile, there's ice and an overturned car on the A170 at Sutton Bank.
