  2. Sale of former Thirsk hospital put on holdpublished at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2018

    The sale of the former Lambert Hospital in Thirsk has temporarily been put on hold so a review of existing medical services can take place.

    Hambleton District Council and the organisation which runs NHS services in the area have been given a month to assess how the building can be used by the community.

    The hospital only had one ward and was closed in 2015, mainly due to difficulties recruiting trained nurses.

    Former Dewsbury Rams winger Donald Kudangirana has been banned for three years and seven months after admitting to an anti-doping violation.

    Kudangirana tested positive for banned substances dostanolone and testosterone at his out-of-competition UK Anti-Doping test in December 2016.

    He played two games for the Rams in 2016, as well as appearing for Hemel Stags on a dual-registration basis.

    His ban will expire at 00:00 on 29 August 2019.

    The owners of a business in Sheffield which produces cutlery say they're in a constant battle against repeated vandalism of their building.

    A woman in her 60s has been seriously sexually assaulted and robbed in York by a man who befriended her and lured her to the place where he carried out the attack.

    The assault happened at about 19:00 on Tuesday after the woman walked with her attacker by the River Ouse.

    They were first seen on Lendal Bridge and walked out of town before eventually reaching the back of St Peter's School. Once there, the man attacked the woman and stole money from her.

    Police say they want people who saw them to come forward.

    One of Sheffield's campaigning Women of Steel statue fundraisers has died at the age of 98.

    Kitty Sollitt was one of four women from the city who fought to get official recognition for thousands of women who kept the city's steelworks producing munitions during World War Two.

    They helped raise £160,000 for the statue in Sheffield City Centre.

    Kitty's family say she embodied the essence of steel and they are in awe of her legacy.

    A man has been left with facial injuries after he was attacked with a baseball bat by a group of men in Batley.

    It happened on Oxford Street at about 15:45 on Tuesday as the 27-year-old man was out walking.

    A dark car is believed to have pulled up and three men got out and assaulted the victim with a baseball bat.

    He managed to escape them and the men then left.

    Police say they're looking for witnesses to the attack and say the suspects are described as three Asian males.

    York Teaching Hospitals Trust has paid out damages and apologised to the family of an elderly woman who died after choking on her food in 2014.

    Staff at York District Hospital failed to spot that Lilian Hugill, who was 84, wasn't wearing her false teeth when she was served her dinner.

    She choked and suffered a cardiac arrest and a brain injury.

    The trust admitted that had appropriate care been provided, Mrs Hugill would not have choked and her death could have been avoided.

    A Sheffield church has been awarded a grant of £220,000 for major repairs to the church roof.

    Ecclesfield Church is one of only five Grade I-listed buildings in Sheffield and has recently been given what's known as "Major Parish Church" status.

    The money for repairs has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will also be used to pay for a state-of-the-art security system.

    Police have issued a warning after a girl of about five-years-old took part in a distraction burglary in Bradford.

    The girl and a man knocked on the door of a house in Lidget Green at about 19:00 on Friday 29 December and offered to remove some rubbish from the garden.

    The homeowner, a man in his 50s, agreed to hand over a small fee and the girl then asked to go in the house to make a drink, which the owner of the house agreed to.

    The homeowner later found that about £40 had been taken from his wallet.

    The man who was with the girl is described as white with short brown hair and he spoke with an Irish accent:

  14. Scarborough water pollution crackdownpublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2018

    The Environment Agency is to crack down on polluters in Scarborough after water in the town's South Bay was found to contain unacceptable levels of human waste.

    Visitors were advised not to swim there after samples showed the water wasn't safe because of the amount of bacteria. It's the only beach in the north of England where that's the case.

    James Duke, from the Environment Agency, says plans are being put in place during the winter in a bid to improve the situation:

    Independent businesses in part of Bradford which have been hit by a number of recent break-ins are calling on the police to do more to protect them and their livelihoods.

    The owners of shops, hairdressers and cafes in Wyke told the BBC in the summer that tens of thousands of pounds' worth of stock had been stolen.

    Though the West Yorkshire force did promise to tackle the problem, business owners now claim little has been done.

    Health bosses are insisting there's no crisis in the NHS, despite hospitals being told to postpone non-urgent operations until next month.

    The step's been taken to ease the pressure on hospitals this winter and it's thought 55,000 people could be affected.

    Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has apologised to patients in England affected by the decision to postpone ops.

    Non-urgent treatments had already been cancelled until mid-January, but NHS England said on Tuesday that would now be extended to the end of the month.

    It came after hospitals reported they were struggling to cope with the surge in patients being seen since Christmas.

    But Professor Suzanne Mason, who is from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and is an A&E consultant in Yorkshire, says the move is too little too late:

    A pair of men who stole wagons and scaffolding worth up to £80,000 from a building yard in Workington have been given suspended prison sentences.

    Elijah Boswell, 30, from Barnsley, and Gary McDonald, 20, from Sowerby in Thirsk, both admitted theft.

    Boswell was given a 21-month jail term and McDonald was handed a 12-month prison sentence - both suspended for 18 months.

    They must also complete 180 hours unpaid work and a four-month night-time curfew.

    Boswell must also complete a rehabilitation programme and pay £6,600 compensation.

    An 86-year-old woman who was injured in a crash on the M1 at the weekend has died in hospital, external.

    Derbyshire Police said Elizabeth Harrison, from Barnsley, was a rear seat passenger in a Nissan Qashqai that crashed on the southbound carriageway between Chesterfield and Alfreton on Saturday afternoon.

    A 90-year-old passenger from the same car remains in a critical condition.
