  1. Body of homeless woman found in Leedspublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    The body of a homeless woman has been found in the middle of Leeds this morning.

    Emergency services were called to the area near the Dark Arches on Neville Street just after 09:00 this morning.

    A passer-by discovered the woman and called for help after they saw her collapsed in the street.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're not treating her death as suspicious and are looking for other homeless people that may have been with her.

    We've been talking about the planned industrial action on our rail service this week.

    Drivers and guards at Northern Rail, Southern and Merseyrail have started a 24-hour strike in a dispute over the role of guards.

    It's the first in a wave of strikes this week, with another further action taking place on Wednesday and Friday.

    The RMT union is opposing plans to make trains driver-only operated.

    Management at all three companies say they want a negotiated solution and deny jobs will be lost.

  6. Latest: Three days of rail strike action this weekpublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    There's industrial action today on Northern Rail.

    Northern Rail say they're working with The Great National Rail Project, external to improve trains in the north and that customers must check before travelling, external.

    Industrial action is taking place today, Wednesday and Friday and a limited service will be operating across Yorkshire. The company are running bus replacement services.

    Women are suffering fatal heart attacks because they are not given the same treatment as men, according to a new study.

    Researchers from the University of Leeds looked at more than 180,000 Swedish patients over a 10-year period.

    They found women were less likely to receive recommended treatments such as bypass surgery or statins. When they were given that treatment, the difference in mortality with men decreased.

    The research was part-funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and published in the journal of the American Heart Association.

    Police investigating a serious sexual assault in York last week have charged a man who's been charged with rape and robbery.

    The 29-year-old man from York was arrested yesterday.

    He is due to appear at York Magistrates' Court today.

    A woman from Rawmarsh has had two mobility scooters stolen from her home in the space of a few weeks.

    Sharon Ashworth has tried keeping them chained to a wall but the thieves were still successful in taking them.

    People are being asked about their views on proposals, external to cut congestion on York's outer ring road.

    The proposals to upgrade Wetherby Road roundabout involve adding more lanes and improving the area for pedestrians and cyclists.

    It's part of a programme of improvements costing almost £40m.

    The consultation on plans to upgrade the Wetherby Road roundabout runs until the beginning of next month.

    City councillors will later consider proposals for other roundabouts on the A1237 outer ring road.

    Residents on a former coal board housing estate have secured talks to discuss the future of their homes.

    Seventy homes on the estate in Outlon could be demolished to make room for a new housing estate.

    Homes were built in Oulton to help accommodate Rothwell colliery miners and their families

    They were originally built to accommodate Rothwell Colliery miners and their families and were only meant to be used short-term. They have now stood for more than half a century.

    But the estate has since been bought by the investment company Pemberstone, who want to build 72 new homes on Sugar Hill Lane and Wordsworth Drive.

    Tenants are worried they will be priced out of the area if the plan goes ahead.

    Pemberstone says it will respect the rights of all tenants and has no immediate plans for the work to start.

    Police are searching for a group of youths after a teenage boy smashed the window of a police car in North Yorkshire.

    Two PCSO (Police Community Support Officers) were investigating a report that youths had been throwing objects at cars in the Bilton area of Harrogate on Saturday night.

    When they set off a teenage boy ran by the police car and smashed the rear driver’s side door window with the black plastic drainpipe.

    Neither of the officers were injured.

    Sheffield's Joe Root spent a spell in hospital overnight ahead of the final day of The Ashes in Sydney.

    The England captain was suffering with viral gastroentiritis and although he did bat for a time at the SCG he had to retire hurt during the lunch interval.

    England lost the test match by an innings and 123 runs.

    The test captain made 58 and couldn't take part in the post match interviews due to the sickness.

    A strike by RMT union members that begins today over rail safety fears will have an impact on passengers using Northern services in Yorkshire.

    The planned walkouts will also see disruption across the rest of the UK with some staff on South Western, Merseyrail, Southern and Greater Anglia trains also taking action.

    If you're planning on using Northern today then here's what you need to know:

    • Leeds - reduced service running to Bradford, Carlisle, Doncaster, Harrogate, York and Sheffield
    • Huddersfield - reduced service to Barnsley and Sheffield, plus a bus replacement to Stalybridge in Manchester
    • Wakefield - hourly service to Huddersfield, with the last depature at 1744
    • Sheffield - Reduced service to Leeds, Barnsley, Chesterfield and Wakefield
    • Skipton - Bus replacement service on route to Settle
    • Doncaster - Reduced service to Leeds with the last departure at 1726

    The use of plastic bottles, cups, cutlery, and even drinking straws could be ditched by businesses along the North Yorkshire coast if a campaign is successful.

    Campaigners say these items are having a damaging impact on the environment and marine life.

    Scarborough Sealife Centre says that marine wildlife often mistake plastic in the sea for food.

    Items like plastic bags could be mistaken for jellyfish and eaten by turtles.

    Other animals can end up tangled in the plastic waste:

    In August last year a seal was spotted with a flying ring stuck around its neck off the coast of North Yorkshire.

    It's a motion which has been tabled by two Green party councillors in Scarborough who want to end the use of "single use plastics" by 2018.

    Councillors are meeting later to discuss the issue.

  19. Sheffield PhD student faces deportation to Iraqpublished at 07:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    A PhD student from Sheffield has been warned by the Home Office that he faces deportation back to Iraq if he does not leave the UK after his visa expires in March.

    Ahmed Sedeeq is orginally from Mosul. His asylum application was refused by the Home Office and spent Christmas in a detention centre.

    He said that he felt desperate:

    The Home Office said: "When someone has no leave to remain in the UK, we expect them to leave the country voluntarily. Where they do not, we will seek to enforce their departure."
