    Tomorrow night sees Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday meet in the 129th Steel City derby.

    To ensure the safety of the thousands of fans from both sides of the city attending the game, South Yorkshire Police have announced that there'll be more officers out on patrol to help keep the city centre safe.

    The force are also encouraging the public to interact with the police men and women on shift for the match, even going as far to request that you "say hi" to them as you head to and from Bramall Lane.

    The re-opening of Elm Tree Police Station at Manor Top in Sheffield has been welcomed by residents, councillors and South Yorkshire's police and crime commissioner.

    The station on City Road was shut for approximately three years and will be home to five full time officers who'll serve the districts of Park, Arbourthorne, Manor Castle and Darnall.

    There will also be an additional five Police and Community Support Officers based at the site.

    Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged to eradicate all avoidable plastic waste in the UK by 2042.

    The commitment is part of the government's 25-year plan to improve the natural environment.

    There will be another 500 extra council homes built in Sheffield by 2023.

    Sheffield City Council has already committed to building 1,000 council houses over the next two years.

    The council is currently working on plans for new housing schemes for older people, families and people with learning disabilities.

    The council’s plan also includes continued investment in existing homes with improvements planned to roofs, kitchens, bathrooms, windows and electrics.

  9. Meningitis C baby Kia Gott to return home by Aprilpublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The parents of a one-year-old girl who had all of her limbs amputated after contracting meningitis C have been told she will be allowed home by April.

    Her father Paul said he "felt like we won the lottery" when he was told the news by a hospital consultant.

    Medics have described Kia's condition as "one of the worst cases of meningitis" ever seen.

    The mother of a Sheffield student who died after taking MDMA has said she hopes her daughter will be remembered as more than a victim of illegal drug use.

    Joana Burns died after a night out in 2017 to celebrate completing her maths degree at Sheffield Hallam University.

    Mosca Burns said her daughter, 22, had hoped to go on to teach the subject.

    At a workshop aimed at encouraging girls to study maths, Mrs Burns said she hoped Joana's legacy would be in "inspiring girls, not a drugs death".

    York author Tricia Walker has died after a short illness.

    She was diagnosed with a rare aggressive form of stomach cancer and passed away at York's St Leonard's Hospice last Monday surrounded by her family.

    Her best selling book Benedict's Brother is being made into a film - Her family say they'll continue to make sure that Tricia's dream will become a reality.

    Her father, Peter Walker wrote more than 130 books and his constable series was adapted into TV's Heartbeat. He died last April.

  12. Charity claims Yorkshire has bowel cancer hotspotspublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    New research from Yorkshire Cancer Research claims people living in parts of Yorkshire are more likely to get bowel cancer, and are less likely to survive it, than people living in other parts of the country.

    The number of people getting the disease and the number of those who die from it in parts of Scarborough and Ryedale, the Vale of York, Airedale and Wharfedale, Craven and Calderdale, is higher than the national average.

    The charity is investing more than £100,000 in a new study to find out why.

    In Scarborough and Ryedale a higher number of patients are diagnosed at a later stage.

    Police say they're trying to find the family of a rough-sleeper whose body was found on the streets of Leeds on Monday.

    Officers aren't treating the death of 56-year-old Fiona Watson as suspicious - she was found under the Dark Arches in Neville Street at about 09:00.

    West Yorkshire Police say that she also went by the name of Swan and lived on Prosper Street in Hunslet and she may have a sister in London.

    They are also still trying to find three people who were with her at the time she died.

    Sport scientists at Sheffield Hallam University are working on a new project that looks at helping breast cancer patients reduce the risk of the disease returning.

    Yorkshire Cancer Research has invested £238,000 into the project which is being led by Northumbria University and supported by Dr Helen Crank (pictured), a reader at Hallam's Centre for Sport and Exercise Science.

    The research will focus on helping breast cancer patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight following treatment and Dr Crank will help to lead and coordinate this research in Sheffield and Newcastle.

    Patients from Yorkshire and the North East who have undergone treatment for a type of breast cancer that uses oestrogen to grow will be recruited to take part in the initiative as part of a clinical trial.

    Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to after an attempted burglary at a jewellers in Whitby.

    It happened at Youngs Jewellers in the early hours of last Thursday.

    Police say it's believed that the suspect tried to jemmy open the front door, while another suspect acted as lookout.

    Officers are asking anyone who recognises the man in the image to get in touch.

  17. Tim Peake's spacecraft landing at York Museumpublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one not be missed. Who can forget Tim Peake's extraordinary Principia mission to the International Space Station, where he spent six months orbiting Earth, in December 2015? There wasn't much he didn't do on that mission.

    He was the first British Astronaut to do a spacewalk, the first person to be named in the Queen's Birthday Honours while in space, he carried out experiments and he even managed to run the London Marathon (on a treadmill) in Space while others were doing it on earth.

    On the 18 June 2016, Tim Peake returned to earth in the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module. You've got the chance to see it at York's National Railway Museum from 17 January until 8 March 2018. There's also a chance for a space-age virtual reality experience narrated by the astronaut himself.

  19. Road closed as police deal with reports of gun at propertypublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A main road into Bradford was closed briefly this lunchtime as police carried out an armed raid at a property.

    Officers closed Leeds Road after they had reports there could be a gun being kept inside the premises.

    A 28-year-old man was arrested and is in police custody.

    Investigations are continuing at the scene.
