    A new study showing the economic contribution of international students to parts of the UK has been released.

    Figures from The Higher Education Policy Institute show that pupils who began their studies in Yorkshire and the Humber during 2015/16 generated £1.59bn for the region's economy.

    The parliamentary constituency of Sheffield Central tops the country-wide list for net gain with the 2,456 international students who lived in the constituency and started their studies in 2015/16 generating £226m per year during the duration of their course.

    The Leeds Central constituency was 11th in the table, generating £153.9m from international students during the same period.

    Some of the worlds largest batteries could be coming to North Yorkshire.

    Drax Power station near Selby is looking at switching from coal to gas.

    Drax is asking people what they think of the idea to install huge batteries to store electricity.

    The plans go on show in Selby later this month and a consultation continues until the end of February.

    Yorkshire players Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have been named in England's 16-man squad for their two test series in New Zealand in the spring.

    Despite a 4-0 defeat to Australia in the Ashes it's no surprise that the side's captain and wicket keeper have been retained for the trip with the first test match beginning in Auckland on 22 March.

    There's no place on the tour though for fellow Yorkshire player Gary Ballance, who's been dropped from the squad despite being on the recent Ashes tour to Australia.

    Rotherham Council has seized 10 vehicles believed to be involved in fly-tipping.

    It is believed that this is the largest single seizure of vehicles for fly-tipping undertaken in the UK since legislation changed allowing council's to take direct action from the end of 2016.

    Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Police were involved in the operation.

    Rotherham Council says environmental crime currently costs them £1.7m a year.

    That figure includes more than £250,000 on removing fly-tipped rubbish.

    There are concerns that flood defences in a part of York have not been put in place.

    People in Clementhorpe have been told the defences won't there until 2019.

    A meeting's taking place later so those living in the area can speak directly to the Environment Agency.

    A mum from Thurcroft is stranded in Venice with her partner and new-born baby.

    The couple's daughter Matilda was born 15 weeks premature whilst they were on holiday.

    Just in case you were wondering what happened on your journey home last night.

    Hundreds of motorists were stuck for several hours on the M1 when it was closed by police in both directions after a HGV overturned.

    Long queues began after the crash at about 15:00 GMT on the southbound carriageway between junctions 46 and 45 near Garforth, West Yorkshire .

    Adrian Bracken, who was stuck for more than five hours, said traffic management was "appalling".

    The lorry driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    Slow traffic due to accident, now on the hard shoulder on M62 Westbound between J29 M1 (Lofthouse)andJ28 A650 / A653 (Tingley), congestion on M62 to J31 A655 (Castleford).

    All lanes have been re-opened. Travel time is around 50 minutes.

    Virgin Trains will have to pay a £165m penalty for walking away from the East Coast rail franchise which runs services between Scotland, Yorkshire and London.

    The company, along with partners Stagecoach, will stop running services in 2020.

    This is three years earlier than scheduled.

    It has suffered heavy losses since taking over the troubled line where two previous private operators failed.

    Labour says it'll mean a massive bill for taxpayers.

    In the Commons the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling defended the move.

    Police have confirmed that a 15-year-old girl who was seriously injured when a car hit a bus stop in Huddersfield has died.

    Tributes have been paid to Katelyn Dawson by her friends.

    Four people were injured when a BMW hit a bus stop in the Moldgreen area yesterday morning.

    A 17-year-old girl and a 47-year-old woman were badly injured and a 51-year-old man was also taken to hospital.

    Katelyn's friends describe her as "amazing, kind, funny and beautiful."
