    There are plans to close the prep school for Ampleforth College.

    St Martin's Ampleforth is an Catholic independent school for children aged three to 13-years-old.

    The St Laurence Education Trust has announced plans for a phased closure starting in September this year, describing it as "the end of an era".

    A major route through the Dearne Valley in South Yorkshire is closed this lunchtime due to an accident while the emergency services attend the scene.

    The A6195 (Engine Lane) is shut in both directions between Brierley in Shafton and Park Spring Road in Grimethorpe.

    Some local bus services are also affected with Stagecoach's 28,29 and 30 routes suffering delays and diversions.

    Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has welcomed the government’s launch of a 25-year plan for the environment - but hopes the scheme will be backed by strong legislation and funding.

    They're delighted that Theresa May has responded to the concerns of conservation organisations across Yorkshire and the UK about wildlife.

    The trust says it feels that this is becoming a "national scandal" and has ever-increasing negative consequences, from the flooding of Yorkshire’s towns and cities, to air pollution and the deluge of plastic litter in the oceans.

    They'll play three games in the tournament with their first match against Nomad Astana from Kazakhstan which begins at 16:00 GMT tomorrow.

    If you're out and about this might slow you down.

    A61 Swindon Lane in both directions blocked due to accident between Dunkeswick Lane and A658 (Buttersyke Bar). Affecting traffic between Harewood and Pannal.

    There's also delays on:

    A64 Westbound at Stockton-on-the-Forest traffic is heavier than normal at Towthorpe/Moor Lane junction.

    A1079 Hull Road at Wilberfoss. There are long delays in the roadworks area. Long Lane is closed due to water works.

    Two people have been arrested and released as police investigate the possible murder of a 19-year-old woman who lived in Leeds and disappeared 32-years ago.

    Harbans Kaur Lally was last seen in the UK in 1985 and on Monday officers from West Yorkshire Police arrested a 75-year-old man on suspicion of her murder.

    They also arrested a 74-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder - both in Gravesend in Kent.

    A 53-year-old man was also arrested on on suspicion of perjury on Monday from the Hay Mills area of Birmingham.

    He has been released under investigation and the older man and woman have been released on police bail.

    Detectives have revealed that they have recently received information about Harbans’ disappearance and suspected murder.

    She was also known as Susan and had the maiden name Ranu and worked at the head office of the Burton Group in Harehills until April 1985, having moved to Leeds from Rugby the year before.

    She had a daughter in July 1985 and was living in Meanwood area.

    Later that year she went back to Rugby and disappeared, possibly after travelling to India.

  10. Police appeal over assault on man, 19published at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to a reported assault outside a pub in Chapeltown just before Christmas.

    The force received reports that a 19-year-old man was assaulted outside the Waggon and Horses pub in the centre of the town at around 23:30 on Friday 22 December.

    The victim was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

    From initial inquiries officers believe there was also an incident inside the premises.

  11. Tributes paid to 15-year-old after bus stop crashpublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The school of a 15-year-old school girl who died in a crash in Huddersfield have described her as a "passionate, popular student".

    Katelyn Dawson was one of three pedestrians seriously injured after being hit by the car at a bus stop on Wakefield Road yesterday at 08:15.

    In a statement, Mr McNally of Shelley College in Huddersfield said the whole school was "devastated" by Katelyn's death

    He added "She loved to dance and was starting to plan her options for when she left school this year. Her loss, at a time when she had everything to look forward to in life, is sad beyond words."

    Crash

    Police are appealing for more information about the crash and want any witnesses to come forward.

    A 47-year-old woman is still in hospital with serious injuries and is in a stable condition, a 17-year-old girl is also still in hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

    The driver of the BMW which hit the bus stop, a 51-year-old man, was discharged from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after being treated.

  12. North Yorkshire A&E bosses sign letter to PMpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The heads of York and Harrogate's A&E departments have written to Theresa May to say that the NHS is "severely and chronically underfunded".

    They're among 68 bosses of A&E departments in England and Wales to sign a letter which comes as waiting times have been revealed to be at their worst since targets were introduced in 2004.

    The letter says the "current level of safety compromise is at times intolerable, despite the best efforts of staff."

    But ministers say plans are in place to help the health service cope, despite mounting evidence of growing pressures.

  13. Second teacher jailed for child sex abuse at former Cathedral schoolpublished at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A 59-year-old man has become the second former teacher at a North Yorkshire choir school to be jailed for historical sex abuse of young boys. Ian David Charles Atkinson, who now lives in Somerset, was a history teacher and boarding master at the former Ripon Cathedral Choir School.

    A jury at Bradford Crown Court found him guilty of indecent assaults and indecency with a child while he worked at the school in the early 2000's.

    The court also heard how a police inquiry revealed he'd committed similar offences at another boarding school in Hampshire.

    Atkinson was jailed for 12 years and put on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

  14. Accident on M1 closes two lanespublished at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018
    Breaking

    The northbound side of the M1 motorway currently has two lanes closed northbound on the South Yorkshire/Derbyshire border due to an accident involving two lorries and a van.

    The inside two lanes of the four have been closed by the Highways Agency between junction 30 and junction 31 to the south of Sheffield.

    The accident itself is just after the Woodall Services with delays back towards junction 29a for Markham Vale in Derbyshire.

    An investigation's been launched into how a woman died after being found unconscious in a police cell in Bradford.

    Claire Harper was detained by West Yorkshire Police in the early hours of Sunday morning and was being held at Trafalgar House police station.

    At about 12:30 she was found unconscious in her cell, she was taken to hospital but the 44-year-old couldn't be revived.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct said "This is a very serious incident and we will be investigating the contact West Yorkshire Police had with Claire prior to her death.”

  16. South Yorkshire sees region's biggest house price increasepublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley have seen the highest increase in house prices in Yorkshire over the last month, with Leeds close behind them.

    The UK's largest mortgage lender, the Halifax, has released the figures which show the three South Yorkshire places have seen increases of 4.2%.

    Leeds saw an increase of 4.1% but Wakefield only increased by 0.9% and Hambleton in North Yorkshire saw a decrease in prices at -1.9%.

    Prices in London rose by just 1% - the slowest increase for six years - with the highest areas being the East Midlands and parts of Wales which saw 8% increases.

  17. Kia Gott: Meningitis C girl to return home in Aprilpublished at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A one-year-old girl who had all of her limbs amputated after contracting meningitis C will be allowed home by April, doctors have said.

    Kia Gott, from Bradford, has been in hospital since September and has endured multiple skin grafts.

    Her father Paul said he "felt like we won the lottery" when he was told the news by a hospital consultant earlier.

    Medics have described Kia's condition as "one of the worst cases of meningitis" ever seen.

  18. Man, 74, pushed to floor in Mexborough robberypublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    Did you witness the robbery of a 74-year-old man in Mexborough on Tuesday evening?

    If so South Yorkshire Police want you to get in touch with information.

    The theft took place outside the victim's house on Lorna Road in the town just after 17:00 and resulted in him suffering minor injuries after being pushed to the floor.

    His watch was also stolen.

    The attacker is described as being white and around 6ft tall and of a large and muscular build, he also had no front teeth and was wearing a dark hooded top.

    An investigation continues and any information can be passed onto the force via 101.

    A 38-year-old woman who went missing in York last night has been found.

    Police carried out extensive searches and used social media messages to try and locate Elizabeth Anne Jowitt.

    They've thanked people for their help after she was found in York this morning.

    One fan who's travelling a considerable distance to be at Bramall Lane for the match is Paul Gerald from Portland in Oregon (USA).

    He feels the atmosphere at sporting events in the UK is much better than in the USA but which side of the city will he be cheering for come kick off?
