  2. Crossbow murder victim 'helped those worse off'published at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    A housing officer who was murdered in a suspected crossbow attack in East Yorkshire "dedicated many hours to helping those worse off than himself", according to the council where he worked.

    Shane Gilmer (pictured), 30, was killed and his pregnant girlfriend Laura Sugden was injured in the attack at their home in the village of Southburn, near Driffield, on Friday night.

    Police launched a manhunt for suspect Anthony Lawrence, whose body was found in a vehicle near Scarborough in North Yorkshire on Sunday.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council's chief executive, Caroline Lacey, said: "Working in housing meant Shane assisted people who were homeless, to move into their own homes and he dedicated many hours to helping those worse off than himself.

    "Many of the people he helped have since expressed their appreciation of what he did for them."

    A school bus full of children skidded on black ice in Bradford this morning, careering into some railings.

    A health care boss in North Yorkshire says he wants to see wages for home care workers increased to cover the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

    Director of Riccall Care, Mike Richards, says the cost of fuel is leading to some carers quitting their jobs.

    The family of PC Dave Fields, who died in a crash on Christmas day, have paid tribute to him ahead of his funeral in Sheffield this afternoon.

    PC Dave Fields was responding to an incident when the marked BMW 3 Series he was driving was in collision with a Citroen C3 on the A57 in Sheffield.

    In a statement, his family say: "Dave was an amazing husband, father and friend who was loved by everyone who knew him. He made us all proud every day and will be missed so much."

    They add that they are "really grateful for the support and incredibly kind wishes we have received from everyone so far".

    Leeds United have announced they have raised £200,000 for five-year-old Toby Nye's Neuroblastoma treatment.

    The club raised £175,000 for him after players and staff donated a day's pay and midfielder Samu Saiz gave an additional £25,000 this week.

    Toby will attend Leeds United's game on Saturday with Millwall.

    Leeds United Managing Director Angus Kinnear said: “We talk about family and togetherness a lot at our club, it’s a culture we have been determined to reinstate across everyone involved with Leeds and raising this money has truly been a team effort."

    A plastic bag caught in overhead power lines has caused problems for North Yorkshire train users heading south today.

    The bag got caught in the overhead lines near St Neots in Cambridgeshire, meaning delays to Virgin Trains East Coast services.

    Poor weather conditions are also affecting journeys to and from London Kings Cross

  9. Yorkshire gets £404,631 Arts Council fundingpublished at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Yorkshire has been given £404,631 in the latest round of Arts Council funding out of £1m in Northern grants.

    The biggest awards of £30,000 each went to Leeds-based Heads Together Productions, Interplay Theatre Trust and The Paper Birds Theatre Company with another £30,000 going to the Marsden Jazz Festival based in Kirklees.

    Among the awards in North Yorkshire £28,489 was to The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond.

    While among the grants in South Yorkshire was £29,405 given to Theatre Delicatessen in Sheffield.

    Hospitals in Leeds were completely full on three days last week, and almost full for the rest of the week.

    The Royal College of Nursing says patients are put at risk if more than 85% of beds are occupied.

    However new national figures have shown that pressure on the health service has eased slightly in the last week.

    A derelict site in Huddersfield is set to be transformed into a new state of the art veterinary surgery with facilities that "wouldn't be out of place" in a human hospital.

    A 150-year-old newspaper, concert tickets from 1956 and a wrapper from a Cadbury's Flake, which cost 6d, have been found by workers carrying out the £8.5m refurbishment of St George's Hall in Bradford.

    Some of these objects were found when the old seats were removed from the dress circle.

    For the last 10 years, the world famous East Window in York Minster has been the subject of a major restoration and conservation project, the largest of its kind in Europe.

    All 311 stained glass panels were removed from the 15th Century window, which is the size of a tennis court, in 2008 so York Glaziers Trust could begin the mammoth task of restoring the fragile masterpiece.

    The Sheffield Star is reporting, external that more than 1,000 crimes have been reported in the city's parks in the last three years.

    They included child rape, kidnapping and drug trafficking although the most common offence was assault.

    Sheffield Council responded saying it works out at one crime per day across all 800 green spaces in the city.

    Police are urging drivers to take extra care in wintry conditions after a flurry of snow-related collisions caused traffic disruption.

    North Yorkshire officers say they've responded to a series of crashes during the early hours of today.

    Some of the incidents so far have included:

    • Collision between a tanker and a VW Golf on the A59 at Blubberhouses at 00:20.
    • An HGV jack-knifed on the south-bound A66 at Ravensworth at 01:25.
    • A black Renault Clio crashed through a hedge and ended up in a field on the B6267 at Nosterfield, near Bedale, at around 08:30.
    • At 08:40 a milk cart came off the A684 at Patrick Brompton, Bedale.

    A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “It has clearly been a difficult time on the roads due to the snowfall overnight.

    “Remember, it is always best to arrive later than never. If the conditions are severe and your journey is not essential, then it is best to stay indoors until the roads become clear.”

  17. Tributes to Sheffield police officer ahead of his funeralpublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Tributes are being paid online to PC Dave Fields who died in a crash on Christmas Day.

    The officer was killed while responding to an incident when his BMW was in a collision with a Citroen. A passenger in that car - 61-year-old Lorraine Stephenson - also died.

    Snow

    The chilly conditions have affected the roads, with warnings to take care coming from the police to avoid the B1249 at Staxton Hill, near Scarborough and parts of the Harrogate, Craven and Richmond areas which are described as "difficult."

    Schools have suffered too. Almost 30 in the county have had to close.

    The researchers behind the Born in Bradford, external programme are asking for families who are involved to get in to touch with them to help further their study.

    Their research began in 2007 and tracked the lives of over 30,000 people to find out what influences the health and wellbeing of families.

    It is one of the largest research projects in the world.

  20. Sheffield teenagers fundraise after anorexia battlepublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Two Sheffield teenagers who met when suffering from anorexia want to raise money and awareness in order to try to help others with eating disorders.

    Lara Ferguson from Crookes and Lizzie Nice from Ecclesall are now 18 and 19 and met at a day centre in Sheffield two years ago.

    Their fundraising will take them on a trek in South America this summer.
