    After a journalistic career spanning six decades, BBC Look North correspondent John Cundy has retired.

    John began his career in 1965 with local newspapers before joining BBC Radio Merseyside in 1974 where he worked as a news producer, newsreader and presenter.

    Stints at BBC Radio Scotland and Radio Leeds followed before John joined Look North as community affairs correspondent in 1991 and has recently worked as a news correspondent.

    Tim Smith, acting Head of BBC Yorkshire, said: "To work for more than 50 years as a journalist, much of it in one of the most high profile roles in Yorkshire, is a magnificent achievement.

    "John's colleagues look up to him; people he has interviewed respect him and most importantly of all, viewers trust him.

    "John's experience and knowledge of some of the biggest stories which have happened in Yorkshire are unparalleled. This really is the end of an era."

    Community groups in South Yorkshire have been awarded a total of £112,000 from the county's Police and Crime Commissioner.

    Dr Alan Billings awarded the cash to 77 organisations dedicated to protecting vulnerable people and tackling crime or anti-social behaviour.

    Most of the funding has gone to groups which provide sports clubs for young people in a bid to keep them out of trouble.

    Aden Steelers Football Club in Sheffield, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Micky’s Amateur Boxing Club in Mexborough and Sheffield United, who run Kicks sessions at Fir Vale School, are among the groups awarded cash.

    Twenty-year-old Tara Williamson says she wants to give it to a company which can make it into a wig, but it needs to be in good condition.

    She says hers isn't in great condition and says she's looking for "somewhere where they would be able to take my hair and use it somehow".

    Tara says she really wants to help someone who has lost their hair to cancer.

    A fresh appeal has been made for witnesses to the death of a Barnsley teenager before Christmas.

    The 17-year-old boy was riding a bicycle when he was involved in a collision with a Dacia Compass on Shaw Lane in Carlton at about 20:20 on 23 December.

    The teenager suffered life-threatening injuries before dying in hospital on Christmas Eve.

    Anyone who saw the boy, who was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms, a blue hooded top and a hat and gloves, before the collision is asked to contact police on 101.

    A mother and her three-year-old child were threatened by a thief during a burglary in York earlier this week.

    The suspect entered the address on Bramham Road at about 12:20 on Tuesday afternoon and made various demands of the woman before escaping.

    The victim was left in shock and with minor injuries after the burglary, while the child was unhurt.

    Police want to hear from anyone with information about what happened.

    A man has been jailed for life for strangling a mother-of-two to death in West Yorkshire.

    Bradford Crown Court heard today that 23-year-old Jessica King was strangled by her partner, Jordan Thackray, just hours after she said to him: "I know you're going to kill me".

    Thackray, 28, from Halifax, attacked her on her bed while their two young daughters were in the house.

    He wrote in a later confession: "I deserve to be sentenced to life."

    He was ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years in prison.

    Over 100 people have had to go to hospital in Sheffield after falling over due to black ice.

    Sheffield Teaching Hospitals says it's brought in additional specialists to deal with the rise in broken bones.

    People are being advised that they can get treatment at the Broad Lane walk-in centre and the minor injuries unit at the Hallamshire Hospital, as well as at the A&E.

    A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man who was found unconscious with head injuries on a Castleford street on Monday died last night in hospital.

    West Yorkshire Police say they think Darrius Skinderowicz was assaulted at about 18:25 on 15 January at the junction of Carlton Street and Albion Street.

    A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault, and subsequently murder, in connection with the death of the 41-year-old. He's since been released on police bail.

    Police investigating a series of stabbings in Sheffield last month have released CCTV images of three men they would like to speak to:

    Five men were injured, four of them with stab wounds, after an assault on Walker Street on 23 December.

    Officers believe the three men pictured above may have vital information which could help their investigation.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

    Two men have both been charged with violent disorder in connection with the incident.

    Business owners and their customers have welcomed extra powers to remove and fine groups of youths causing anti-social behaviour in North Yorkshire.

    A new Public Spaces Protection Order has been granted, giving police more powers to move groups on, fine them for unruly behaviour and prevent some activities at the Broadway shops in Colburn, near Catterick.

    In the last nine months there've been more than 200 reports of youths behaving in an anti-social way - which has also affected Colburn Library, residents of local flats and the Colburn Business Park.

    Queues quickly built as all three lanes were closed between J29 and J28 westbound.

    A former gambler from South Yorkshire who went to prison because of his addiction says the government must do more to protect gamblers in betting shops.

    David Bradford, from Sheffield, was sent to prison after stealing from his employer to fund his gambling habit. He hasn't placed a bet in three years now.

    He wants the government to lower the maximum bet on fixed odds machines in bookies and help those addicted to online gambling.

    Currently, people can bet up to £100 every 20 seconds on electronic casino games, but ministers are considering a new limit somewhere between £2 and £50.

    It's estimated there are 300 fixed odds gambling machines in Sheffield alone.

    The Association of British Bookmakers says "measures need to be adopted that are of genuine benefit to gamblers" and the "vast majority gamble responsibly".

    Police investigating reports of shots being fired in Sheffield earlier this week have found no injuries, damage or casings.

    South Yorkshire Police were called at about 15:30 on Monday to reports of shots being fired on Dyche Lane in Jordanthorpe.

    An 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm has been released under investigation.

    Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

    If you live in Holmfirth you may have been wondering why the river has been a strange shade of orange:

    The Environment Agency says that it has been out to investigate the "discolouration" in the River Holme today and they've concluded that an iron discharge from an old mine is to blame.

    Officers from the Environment Agency are going to take samples away for testing to make sure it won't have an impact on local wildlife, but say it's unlikely to be harmful.

    Two men have appeared in court charged with the preparation of terrorist acts.

    Farhad Salah, 22, of no fixed address, and 31-year-old Andy Star, of Sheffield Road, in Chesterfield, are accused of conducting research into the manufacture of explosive substances.

    Both appeared via videolink at the Old Bailey from prison in Wakefield.

    Both men spoke only to confirm their names and their nationality as Kurdish Iraqi.

    They were remanded in custody until a pre-trial review at Sheffield Crown Court in March.
