A woman and three children from Bedfordshire have died in a crash on the A34 in Berkshire, in what police have called a "massively tragic" incident.
Thames Valley Police closed the northbound carriageway for about 12 hours near East Ilsley, while the southbound carriageway was closed for around five hours.
Speaking at the scene last night Insp Andy Storey said: "It's a big scene, a massively tragic scene and very difficult for officers to deal with.
"The four who died were in the same motor car. The stretch of the road the accident occurred on is an uphill section and we are looking at the speed of the vehicles involved."

Travel company Tui saw it's shares climb this lunchtime, despite the London market trading lower, after the travel group said it was on track to meet full-year profit forecasts.
The benchmark FTSE 100 index fell 17.6 points, or 0.26%, to 6,848.80. But Tui shares rose 3.1% to 1044p as it reaffirmed profit forecasts despite a difficult year for the travel industry.
It said third-quarter revenues fell 5.7% due to falling bookings to North Africa and Turkey, and the impact of terror attacks in Europe.
However, the Luton-based company said there had been "no apparent slowdown" in UK bookings following the Brexit vote.
Tui said underlying earnings grew 1% in the quarter and it still expected underlying profits for the full year to grow by at least 10%.
Police are asking residents in the Hertfordshire village of Cuffley for help in identifying those responsible for this graffiti.

A fire crew from Cheshunt came to the rescue of a woolly customer this morning when a sheep became trapped in Broxbourne.
The animal had got it's head stuck in fencing near Winnipeg Way.

A man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, after a crash in which four people died and 12 were injured, has been released on bail.
Four lorries and four cars collided on the A34 between Chievelet and East Ilsley in Berkshire about 17:10 yesterday.
The woman and three children pronounced dead at the scene are from Bedfordshire, police say.
The northbound carriageway reopened after more than 12 hours, while the southbound carriageway was closed for around five hours.
Luton council say they are working to make a building safe in the town after a fatal crash in which a 15-year-old girl died.
Nessa Lewandoska was travelling in a car that failed to stop for officers before it crashed into a shop on Tuesday night in High Town Road.
Trevor Holden, the chief executive of Luton Borough Council, says the crash caused extensive damage to the building: "We were working with the police yesterday to make sure the building was safe."
He said that once the building is deemed safe by structural engineers "the problem then falls to the owner of the premises and to their insurers as to what they do with the building".
London Luton Airport say car parking charges for passengers were introduced so that they can "benefit from lower airfares".
An RAC report has highlighted the airport's drop-off charge as the most expensive in the UK.
Luton Airport say "charges were introduced in 2010 to help manage traffic flows and ensure only passengers who use this service are charged.
"By passing on fewer costs to our airlines all passengers benefit from lower airfares," a statement read.
The airport points out that passengers are able to park for free for two hours in the long-stay car park and "15 minutes free in the mid-term car park".
A report by the motoring group the RAC, which highlights London Luton Airport's drop-off charge as the most expensive in the UK, has warned travellers about the penalties for overstaying their time.
The drop-off charge at Luton Airport for 10 minutes, if you stay with your car, is £3 - but if you stay longer it's £1 a minute.
If you want to leave your car to greet someone at arrivals, the airport charges £7 for up to 40 minutes.
The airport say they offer "a range of options for picking up and dropping off passengers".

Pete Williams from the RAC says drivers are always conveying their concerns "about exorbitant parking charges" which led to "a close look at all the short stay parking charges across the UK".

Max Whitlock won Great Britain's first all-around gymnastics Olympics medal in 108 years last night as he took bronze in Rio.
Whitlock, who's from Hemel Hempstead but now trains in Basildon, has claimed only the ninth medal won by a British gymnast and the first in the men's all-around event since Walter Tysall's silver in 1908.
He scored a total of 90.641, which was 1.625 points behind silver medallist Oleg Verniaiev from Ukraine. Japan's Kohei Uchimura, dominant in the event since 2009, took gold.
Max scored 15.200 on his floor routine.
The World Champion in pommel scored 15.875 on his strongest piece of apparatus.
He scored 14.733 on rings.
On vault, Max scored 15.133 with a triple twist.
He scored 15.000 on parallel bars.
And, his lowest score, on horizontal bar was 14.700.
Whitlock said: "My coach and I have been working so hard over the past four years.
"We stepped out of London 2012 and I wanted to prove myself as an all-rounder and I've done that."

A 45-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy and girl, and a 13-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene.
One man was flown by air ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital, and another 11 had minor injuries.
A 30-year-old man from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
