    We've been covering a report into the handling of complaints about a Tory activist, commissioned after the death of a Wisbech man.

    The Conservative Party said it was establishing new procedures for handling complaints by volunteers, including a dedicated hotline and training for relevant party employees.

    Law firm Clifford Chance was brought in to conduct an inquiry following the death of young Tory activist Elliott Johnson, who took his own life at a train station at Sandy in Bedfordshire.  

    Today, party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin said: "The death of Elliott Johnson was a tragedy and our thoughts remain with his family and friends.

    "As we address the findings of this report I want to make clear that there can be no place for bullying behaviour in our party and we all have a responsibility to act when it occurs.

    "The actions we are taking today will continue to ensure volunteers, who are so vital to our party, can flourish."

    Social media can be a cruel world, but you'd hope that wouldn't extend to our Olympic heroes and their families.

    Sadly, that's not been the case for Woburn's Greg Rutherford and his partner, Susie Verrill.

    In an article on The Pool website, she talks about the abuse she and Rutherford, a 2012 gold medalist who added bronze at Rio to his medal haul, have received.

    The article can be seen here, external - but be warned if clicking, the language in the tweets received is unpleasant at best.

    Miss Verrill told The Pool: "My general opinion is if you’re out to make another individual feel bad, you’re harbouring some issues. I actually think a lot of the people who send me abuse on social media would be charming in real life, or at least a tad sheepish."

    A Conservative activist at the centre of bullying allegations was appointed to a key role in the party's general election campaign despite warnings of his record of "aggressive and bullying conduct", an inquiry has found.

    Law firmClifford Chance was brought in to conduct a inquiry following the death of young Tory activist Elliott Johnson, from Wisbech, who took his own life at a train station at Sandy in Bedfordshire.

    The firm found that complaints were made about the conduct of the so-called "Tatler Tory" Mark Clarke on seven occasions before the party finally mounted an investigation into his behaviour.

    However, the report said that the party's then co-chairmen Lord Feldman and Grant Shapps, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, had not been made aware of allegations until August last year when an internal party inquiry was launched.

    The law firm was finally brought in to investigate after Mr Johnson's death. His complaint against Mr Clarke finally triggered the internal investigation.

    There was a still and sombre mood at All Saints Academy in Dunstable today, the day before students get their exam results.

    A pile of flowers and emotional messages lay outside the doors, in tribute to Ethan Houghton, 13 who lost his life on the A34 last week.

    Josh Smith, Ethan's head of year, told me he'd be a great loss to the school. He said he would like to see not only a memorial, but maybe a yearly football match dedicated to his honour.

    I've been talking to Josh Smith, the head of year nine at All Saints Academy in Dunstable. 

    He was due to teach Ethan Houghton, the 13-year-old who was killed in a car crash on the A34 last week, along with this mother, Tracy Houghton, brother Josh and Aimee Goldsmith, both 11.

    He said: "Ethan was a lovely lad, he was the sort of person who could mix between all the different friendship groups. He was a really lovely lad to have in lessons and he always worked really hard. He "always had a cheeky smile."

    Tributes for Ethan were left at his school today, including anecdotes about his love of football and his determination to play even when he broke his arm.

    "You were an amazing boy," said one message. "You always knew how to make me smile," said another.

    School friends of one of three children killed in a car crash have paid tribute to him at his Bedfordshire school.

    Ethan Houghton, 13, died alongside his mum Tracy Houghton, brother Josh, 11, and Aimee Goldsmith, also 11, on the A34 in Berkshire on 10 August.

    All Saints Academy in Dunstable opened this week to allow students to sign a book of condolence in memory of Ethan and his family.

    A 999 control room handler who worked for Thames Valley Police has been dismissed after failing to deal with a call properly.

    In December 2013, Gail Daniels-Ekarte terminated a five and a half minute call from a woman reporting she was in danger.

    The gross misconduct hearing found she did not deal with the call appropriately and did not follow police and guidelines. 

    The woman called later that day and said she'd been raped. 

    Ms Daniels-Ekarte has been dismissed without notice.

  17. Luton terror trail: Church will be 'vigilant' after being used as venue for 'terror speeches'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Members of a church where convicted terrorists held speeches encouraging support for terrorism have spoken out.

    A spokesman from St Margaret's Methodist Church in Luton say they were contacted by police last year after "an alleged misuse" of their premises.

    They say they cooperated fully with the investigation and the authorities.

    It comes after three men from Luton, Mohammed Istiak Alamgir, Yousaf Bashir and Rajib Khan, were found guilty of encouraging support for terrorism.

    It seems many people helped Cheshun's Laura Trott to win four gold medals in the Olympics. 

    Last night she thanked the backstage people we don't normally see from those in the gym, to her coach, nutritionist and analysts who look at her power data.   

    But it also seems Sports Aid might want a mention too. They've tweeted, external a sports aid grant that Trott applied for in 1992, when she was 15.

  20. Airlander awaits maiden flightpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    This amazing photo of the world's biggest aircraft, the Airlander, was taken this morning by our Weather Watcher Tony at Cardington, just outside of Bedford.

    The Airlander 10 - part plane, part airship - was due to take off from Cardington Airfield in Bedfordshire on Sunday.

    The aircraft measures 302ft (92m) long and is about 50ft (15m) longer than the biggest passenger jets.

    It's not known when it's maiden flight will take place.
