A Milton Keynes councillor has said that a lack of housing is a fundamental problem, following criticism from an activist group about temporary accommodation.
Labour's Nigel Long, from Milton Keynes Council, says he thinks the "MK People's Assembly are right", that there "is fundamentally a lack of housing".
The group told us that council discussions on whether to extend emergency plans to house families in one-bedroom flats rather than bed and breakfasts were "a desperate attempt" to tackle the problem.
Mr Long says there are "503 families in temporary accommodation in various places, mostly in Milton Keynes" but also further afield.
"Our problem is getting people out of temporary accommodation into secure, permanent accommodation," he said.

A Milton Keynes activist group has labelled a bid to put homeless families in one-bedroom flats as a desperate move.
The council will meet tonight to discuss the plan which they say is better than having 500 families staying in bed and breakfasts.
MK People's Assembly says the situation is completely dire and caused by a lack of affordable housing.
But Milton Keynes council says housing small families in one-bedroom properties has worked in the past in reducing the need for hotels and other temporary accommodation.
In 2015/16, the council's gross spend on hotel accommodation was £3.1m; for the first quarter of 2016/17 the sum stands at £1.1m.

A £162m link road between the A5 and the M1 is more than halfway to completion.
Last week the chief secretary to the treasury, David Gauke, visited Bedfordshire to inspect the work, which he said was "on time and on budget".
It's hoped the road will ease congestion in Dunstable and along the A5 when it's completed in the spring of next year.
I've been along to see how things are progressing.

The proposed £323.3m takeover of Pinewood Studios - home to James Bond and Star Wars movies - has been given the green light.
Britain's financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, has approved the deal by Aermont Capital, which runs property investment funds, to acquire the famous Buckinghamshire studios.
Pinewood's 007 stage is one of the world's largest and was used to film parts of Spectre and Skyfall, as well as older Bonds including You Only Live Twice (above).
Some of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was also filmed at Pinewood. However, Harrison Ford, the actor who plays Han Solo, was injured when the door of the Millennium Falcon closed on him and broke his leg.
In a statement, Bidco and Pinewood said that the boards of directors were "pleased to announce that they have received approval from the FCA".
A vote will be held on the deal for shareholders to have their say on 19 September.
Home Affairs Committee chairman Keith Vaz has called for "urgent action" to tackle the problem of people entering the UK illegally.
It comes after the BBC obtained figures showing that about 4,000 people were arrested on suspicion of entering the UK illegally over the past three years in the three counties, and more than 27,000 nationwide.
The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, show officers made a total of 27,800 arrests over the period from January 2013 to April this year.
Former Special Branch ports officer Chris Hobbs called the figures "appalling".

He was last seen wearing a grey tracksuit and bright yellow socks with no shoes.
How Mr Casey managed to escape is being investigated.
About 4,000 people suspected of illegally entering the UK have been arrested over the past three years in Beds, Herts and Bucks, figures obtained by the BBC show.
The statistics, obtained from responses to Freedom of Information Act requests by 39 forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, suggest the number of arrests has been steadily increasing.
Figures show that there were more than 2,000 arrests in the Thames Valley, 1,300 in Hertfordshire and just under 1,000 in Bedfordshire.
In the UK overall, more than 27,000 people were arrested - many of those were found at motorway service stations and truck stops, having hidden in lorries.
The Home Office said it wanted "long-term solutions" to illegal migration.
