  5. Luton used to house homeless people in Milton Keynespublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 14 October 2016

    BBC Local Live

The idea to house homeless people in different towns isn't anything new.

  6. Housing homeless MK people in Luton 'will save £1m a year'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 14 October 2016

    Katy Lewis
    BBC Local Live

The decision to house homeless people from Milton Keynes in Luton has been taken because it's "cost-effective".

Those are the words of Nigel Long, Labour cabinet member for wellbeing at Milton Keynes Council, who said the current state of the housing crisis in MK is "horrendous", as it has to house 500 families.

He explained the council has had to look further afield for homes "because of government policy and cuts", which means it can't build enough properties in the area.

He said the plan to move people out of bed and breakfasts 20 miles away to Luton will save about £1m a year, but the cost to taxi children to school hasn't been factored into that figure.

Douglas, who lost the use of his legs as a result of a car crash, was a serving prisoner at HMP Norwich when he committed his latest crimes, and was waiting sentence for the first possession offences.

At London's Appeal Court yesterday, his lawyers argued the latest 12 month jail term, on top of the years he was already serving, was too tough. His appeal was dismissed.
