    There are plenty of local competitors at The Grove in Watford.

    Luke Donald is hosting the event and is originally from Hemel Hempstead. He also played golf as a youngster in High Wycombe. 

    Tyrrell Hatton (pictured), who won the Alfred Dunhill Links championship last week, is from the Harleyford club in Marlow.

    The British Masters is under way at The Grove in Watford. The competition is being hosted by Luke Donald over the next four days.

    The last time The Grove was used for a championship event was in 2006, when Tiger Woods won the WGC American Express Championship. 

    The current leaders are Lee Westwood and Anthony Wall, on -4.

    The University of Bedfordshire will today unveil its new £40m library in Luton.

    The building is part of a £180m investment to re-generate the university's premises.

    The university's vice chancellor, Bill Rammel, is proud of the fact students have been involved in the design of the seven-storey library, saying he wanted to "ensure it was fit for purpose for their real learning, not how we think they ought to learn".

    Bedfordshire's police and crime commissioner is calling for local authorities to work with the police to tackle the problem of travellers in the county.

    Kathryn Holloway has defended police action after criticism from the deputy mayor of Bedford. 

    Deputy Mayor Charles Royden says the police "seem to be blind" to what's happening at illegal traveller camps in the area, but the Bedfordshire PCC says she "shares Charles's frustration" and that "there will be action".

    The issue was raised in the Commons last night by the MP for South-West Bedfordshire, Andrew Selous.

  7. Prisoner with links to Luton abscondspublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    A prisoner with links to Luton has absconded from Hollesley Bay in Suffolk.

    Police officers were contacted by the prison yesterday evening reporting that 39-year-old Stuart Guildea was missing following a roll call at 20:00.

    Guildea is serving a sentence of 12 years and 18 days for robbery, theft and burglary.

    Members of the public are advised not to approach Guildea but call police immediately on 999.

    The first officer on a light aircraft who died along with the pilot in a crash in Chigwell last year was unable to take the controls over in time to avoid the tragedy, a report concludes.

    A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external found that although it could not be stated "unequivocally" that Captain Robert Bull, 40, of Hornchurch, Essex, became incapacitated, "on the balance of probabilities" it is "likely" that he lost control of the aircraft due to medical reasons. 

    First Officer Francis Simmonds, 46, from Luton, Bedfordshire (pictured) was unable to take over and recover the aircraft in time to avoid it crashing into trees at the edge of a field.

  10. Hemel fancy dress shop removes clown masks from shelvespublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    A Hemel Hempstead fancy dress shop has removed scary clown masks from its shelves over fears they could be used to scare children. 

    It comes after a spate of incidents locally and warnings from the police about their misuse.

    The owner of 'A Party Shop', Peter Walker, said he was being responsible. 

    Mr Walker told me "as a father I know how upset I would be to hear that my children had been frightened by the current scary clown craze". 

    The masks have been withdrawn indefinitely.

    The pilot of a light aircraft that crashed in a field at Chigwell on 3 October last year had lost control, an air accident report has concluded.

    Captain Robert Bull, 40, from Hornchurch, Essex, and First Officer Francis Simmonds, 46, of Luton, Bedfordshire, were killed. 

    A post-mortem examination of Mr Bull found evidence of an acute dissection of a coronary artery, indicating that he may have suffered from impaired consciousness or even sudden death. 

    The pathologist was unable to determine whether his condition occurred before or after the crash, but the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external (AAIB) report stated: "If there is no other cause identified for the crash then it is both possible and plausible that this was the precipitating factor."

    A fatal light aircraft crash in Chigwell in October last year may have been caused by the captain suffering a severe heart problem, a report has suggested.

    Robert Bull, 40, died along with 46-year-old First Officer Francis Simmonds. 

    An Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external report has concluded that, while it can't be said for definite, it's most likely the pilot lost control due to medical reasons. 

    The first officer couldn't take control in time to stop the plane hitting trees on the edge of a field.

  14. Rail delays: New plans to compensate passengerspublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Rail passengers will be able to claim compensation for delays of more than 15 minutes under new government plans.

    They can currently only make claims when services are delayed by at least 30 minutes.

    The Department for Transport says its new scheme will initially launch on Govia Thameslink Railway services, including Thameslink and Great Northern, in the next few months before being expanded on other networks.

    Passenger and rail industry groups said they supported the plans.

    The changes would also see compensation of 100% of the single fare ticket value for delays of between 60 and 119 minutes.

  15. What are the Luton Town plans?published at 09:00 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    The owner of the Mall shopping centre has objected to both parts of Luton Town's stadium plans.

    The club identified the Power Court site, next to the shopping centre, as the ideal location for the new ground and would plan to move there by 2020.

    The other part of the plan is to use land the Hatters own near junction 10 of the M1, with retail, leisure and office facilities, to help fund the Power Court move.

    Capital and Regional says it would have a negative impact on the town centre.

  16. Owner of the Mall objects to Luton Town stadium planspublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Luton Borough Council says it is not surprised by objections to Luton Town's new stadium plans from the owners of the Mall shopping centre.

    Capital and Regional says the Power Court stadium could gridlock roads, whilst the development at junction 10, Newlands Park, would take customers away from the town centre.

    Councillor Sian Timoney, deputy leader of Luton Borough Council, said: "It's obvious that [the owners of the Mall] don't want anything that upsets things in terms of traffic and competition."

  17. Concern over bus services in Central Bedfordshirepublished at 08:21 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Central Bedfordshire Council is being criticised over its plans to cut subsidies for bus services. 

    The council says the £1.2m spent last year is not sustainable.

    Potton councillor Adam Zerny claims the changes are likely to result in 50% cuts to bus services in the town, and will heavily reduce services for those with disabilities across Central Bedfordshire.
