Details of systematic child abuse that went on at a home for boys in Shefford have been revealed for the first time today, despite three previous failed police investigations.

Most of the perpetrators are dead or too old to prosecute for the crimes, which took place in the 1960s and '70s.

The Old Bailey heard victims as young as eight were abused at St Francis Boys' Home, run by "nuns and priests from Hell". Two of the worst offenders, Father John Ryan who ran the home and Father Wilfred Johnson, died before this latest investigation.

    The wider investigation covered:

    • 60 victims
    • 103 offences
    • 13 now dead suspects

The seven men and six women police identified as suspects, who are now deceased, held varying roles in the home, including a teacher, choirmaster and handyman.

The victims will try to bring civil action against St Francis Children's Society which ran the home. The victims' lawyer, Tracey Emmott, said it's due in part to the "Savile effect" that they were finally taken seriously.

  12. Abusive housemaster won't face jailpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    Nikki Jenkins
    BBC Local Live

The 80-year-old housemaster found to have abused 25 boys in his care won't face prison.

James McCann of Suffield Court, Swaffham, beat boys at St Francis Boys' Home with a belt or stick and punched one of them with full force in the face, the Old Bailey heard.

The jury was told he also forced youngsters as young as eight to engage in indecent acts for his own sexual gratification in a wash room, a bath and in bed.

However, as McCann, 80, suffers from dementia and has had a number of strokes, he was deemed unfit to stand trial and jurors were told only to decide on the facts of the case rather than his guilt.

Judge Rebecca Poulet told jurors the only course of action in the circumstances was an absolute discharge.

  13. Full extent of abuse at Catholic orphanage can now be revealedpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 10 October 2016

    BBC Local Live

An 80-year-old housemaster who worked at St Francis Boys' Home in Shefford, Bedfordshire, in the 1960s and '70s has been found to have been part of a sadistic and vindictive regime of abuse, involving priests and a paedophile scoutmaster.

James McCann (pictured), of Suffield Court in Swaffham, faced 50 charges relating to an 11-year period from 1963. The case is unusual because the judge ruled McCann was not fit to stand trial, so a trial of the facts alone was held at the Old Bailey.

Jurors decided he was responsible for 30 physical attacks and 12 indecent acts on the boys, who are now aged in their 50s and 60s.

It can now be reported that John Cahill, 74, of Chandos Court, Bedford, an ex-scoutmaster at the Northampton Catholic diocese-run home (below), was jailed for three-and-a-half years in May this year. He abused boys aged between 10 and 15 in the 1960s.

The two main priests facing abuse charges, Fr John Ryan and Fr Wilfred Johnson, died before the present police investigation started.
