    A river barge is being brought in to help with repairs to Marlow Bridge in Buckinghamshire which was damaged when a 37-tonne lorry tried to cross it last month.

    The bridge has a three-tonne weight limit. 

    Since the incident, engineers have found seven areas that need closer inspection. 

    The bridge is expected to remain closed for some months.

    A man has appeared at Reading Crown Court this morning, accused of murdering an elderly woman at her home at Marlow Bottom, Buckinghamshire. 

    Tautuydas Narbutas, 23, from High Wycombe has been charged with murdering 81-year-old Albertina Choules in July.

    She died from a head injury and her body was set on fire. 

    He's due to stand trial in Reading on 18 April.

    The European Space Agency is waiting to discover if the planned landing of a probe on Mars has been successful.

    Det Insp Fraser Wylie, the senior investigating officer, has been speaking about the latest developments in the Luton double murder probe.

    “This is an incredibly complex investigation and we would like to reassure the public that we have a dedicated team of officers on the case, who are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of both the man and woman," he said.

    "I’d like to appeal for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Essex Close in the last week, and in particular over the weekend leading to Monday 10 October, to get in touch.” 

    One man has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

    Bedfordshire Police have confirmed it is now investigating a possible double murder in Luton after a body of a man was found in a bin outside a flat in Essex Close, Luton. 

    Officers are now trying to discover if the incident is linked to the death of a woman in a property, also in Essex Close, on 10 October. 

    Her death was being treated as unexplained, but police are now investigating whether she was murdered.

  7. Moment of truth awaits Europe's Schiaparelli Mars probe.. with a little help from Herts and Buckspublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 19 October 2016

    Scientists at the European Space Agency are waiting anxiously to learn whether they have successfully landed a small robot, carrying instruments designed at Milton Keynes-based The Open University, on the surface of Mars. 

    The landing, part of a joint mission with Russia, is expected to take place about now, but confirmation isn't expected until later.

    The lander will test the systems needed to land a rover, currently being built in Stevenage, on Mars in four years' time.

  9. 'Finn's Law' dropped from TV show 'so Piers Morgan could sing'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 19 October 2016

    Tweeters have blamed Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan for an item on so-called "Finn's Law" being dropped so that he could sing with Boy George, The Mirror, external has reported.

    Former Met Police officer Mike Pannett was due to talk about the campaign to give police dogs and horses the same status as police officers but the Finn's Law Twitter account posted, external that the item had been dropped due to "other news".

    Supporters immediately called the news "disappointing" and blamed the presenter.

    This morning, the petition calling for the law change had been signed by more than 75,000 people.

  10. Essex Close murder: Residents talk of 'shock'published at 14:52 British Summer Time 19 October 2016

    I've been talking to residents in the Essex Close area of Luton, where a body was found in a bin on Monday night.

    Andrew Lovelock, who works near here, he told me he's "shocked" by the news and says: "It's a bit worrying you can find a body so close by."

    Agnes has lived in Luton for 40 years and says the murder has left her "very worried", adding: "You read about it in the papers but you never think it will happen here."

    Sarah Boama lived a few blocks away, she told me she wants to move away and she's now "terrified".

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned by police. The force is urging witnesses to come forward.

    Police are still at the scene of a flat in Essex Close in Luton, where a body was discovered on Monday night in a bin. 

    Forensic officers have been seen inside and outside the building this morning. 

    No post-mortem examination has taken place, and a formal identification has yet to be made.

    The news that three local papers in Northampton, Luton and Dunstable and Milton Keynes are to close has been met with surprise. 

    Chris Gill and Sophie Scott have both tweeted about the news, and they are not happy.

    The A119 North Road in Hertford has re-opened after a lorry carrying skips hit a bridge at about 08:30 this morning. 

    It caused severe delays on surrounding roads and train services to be delayed.

    Newspaper group Trinity Mirror has confirmed that there will be up to 11 redundancies when the MK News, Luton and Dunstable on Sunday and Northants Herald and Post titles close.

    A spokeswoman said: "We are not exiting these markets but will retain a presence in a different way."

    She said the changes would include "increasing the focus on Bedfordshire on Sunday which remains as both a print title and website".

    She added: "We believe there is a better way for us to provide content and commercial solutions for the local communities, for example through a schedule of niche products and awards and events."

    As previously reported we've just had it confirmed that two newspapers in the Three Counties are to close. 

    Trinity Mirror has released a statement saying Luton and Dunstable on Sunday will shut along with One MK, which was formally known as MK News. 

    The Herald and Post in Northampton is also set to close.
