  10. Supermarket 'taking legal action' over Singhbury's Localpublished at 10:39 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Justin Dealey
    BBC Three Counties Radio

Last year, a shopkeeper in Aylesbury raised a few eyebrows when he put a sign up on his Singhbury's Local shop, external, which had similar branding to Sainsbury's.

Inderjit Singh Nagpal said it was nothing to do with the large supermarket chain but there was speculation the bigger company might complain.

    Singhbury's Local

In October, when the sign disappeared there was more speculation that the shop had been made to take it down but the owner said it had been "temporarily removed" because water had got into it and it was being repaired.

Well, today, after being told the sign was still not back up, I went down there to speak to the owner.

    Singhbury's Local

He told me that Sainsbury's had now launched legal proceedings and so he took the decision to take the sign down during that time.

The owner said he's prepared to change the colour of the sign, but not the name because he can justify it - "Singh" is his name and "bury" refers to Aylesbury - and will fight it all the way. The orange colour related to his Sikh religion, he said.

He said there should be a decision next week.

We are contacting Sainsbury's for comment.

Conservative county councillor Mark Shaw said it was a "difficult problem to solve" because it was "likely that many drivers do not realise how little three tonnes is".

"A Range Rover carrying four people and their shopping could easily exceed three tonnes," he said.

"As such, we will be trying to educate local residents on identifying the weight of their vehicles if they are regular users of the bridge."

There are measures in place to deter heavier vehicles from crossing the bridge already, such as width-restricting bollards, but Mr Shaw said this "does not put off all drivers".

Transport for Buckinghamshire was investigating other potential deterrents and liaising closely with Thames Valley Police to discuss closer monitoring and enforcement of the weight limit, he said.
