    We've been following a fatal crash at Lidlington level crossing in Bedfordshire.

    Now British Transport Police has issued a statement. It says: "Officers attended alongside Bedfordshire Police and the East of England Ambulance Service. However, a man, believed to be the driver of the car, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

    "The car was struck by the 09:34 Bedford to Bletchley London Midland service. There are no other reported injuries.

    "At present the man's death is not being treated as suspicious, however officers continue to examine exactly how the car came to be on the tracks."

    The passengers of the train were taken to their destinations by minibuses and taxis.

    A driver died when his car was hit by a train at a level crossing in Bedfordshire today.

    The middle-aged motorist was killed by the Bedford to Bletchley train which ploughed into his blue estate car near the village of Lidlington.

    The crossing has two single automatic barriers that each cover half of the road.

    The train was travelling from Bedford St John station to Bletchley with 11 passengers and two crew on board when the accident happened at around 10:00 today.

    The investigation into the death of a driver on a level crossing in Bedfordshire this morning will look into how the car came to be on the tracks.

    British Transport Police are not treating the crash as suspicious but are trying to establish the car's movements before the crash in Lidlington.

    There are more travel problems in the three counties today.

    In a separate incident to the Lidlington level crossing crash, a person has been hit by a train between Luton and Bedford causing disruption between the two stations.

    Trains are expected to be cancelled or delayed by up to 40 minutes until 16:00.

  12. Level crossing crash: 'People try and dodge the barriers'published at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    I've been at the scene of the Lidlington level crossing crash where a local resident told me he often sees "people try to dodge the barriers".

    This particular level crossing on Marston Road has half barriers which leave opposite sides of the road open.

    The resident, who did not want to be named, said: "People always try to jump it because they can't wait for the train to come through."

    The exact circumstances of this crash are not known, however.

  13. Police renew appeal for information about Foundation Street stabbingspublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Police still want to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Blackfriars Court, Foundation Street, Lower Orwell Street or Rosemary Lane in Ipswich shortly before 22:00 on Sunday, 18 December when the ambulance service was called to treat two men with serious stab injuries. 

    A man arrested after a crash on the A12 last night is the ninth person held over the incident.

    The others are:

    • Two men from Ipswich, aged 48 and 57, arrested shortly after the incident and bailed to return to police on 27 February. 
    •  A 24-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder late on Monday 19 December and has been bailed until 2 March 2017
    • On Tuesday, 20 December, a 33-year-old man and a 41-year woman, both from Ipswich, were detained. The 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder while the 41-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been bailed until 27 February
    • Two men from Luton, both aged 20, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to supply controlled drugs on Thursday, 22 December. They were brought to Suffolk for questioning and have been released on bail until 6 March
    • A 26-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on Wednesday, 28 December, on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to supply controlled drugs. He has now been bailed until 28 February while further inquiries are carried out

    I've been speaking to eye-witnesses at the scene of the Lidlington level crossing crash.

    Kieran Sargent was on the train at the time of the crash. He told me he "heard this sound that wasn't right" and when he looked up he saw a car that was "absolutely obliterated".

    Of the other passengers on the train, he said: "Everyone was shocked; I've been shaking since I got off."

    A ninth person has been arrested over a stabbing attack in Ipswich on Sunday, 18 December when two men were found with serious injuries in Foundation Street.

    Essex Police arrested a 30-year-old man from Ealing on suspicion of assisting an offender after a grey Audi A5 failed to stop for officers on the northbound A12 last night.

    The car overturned on the road after police were following it, two police officers suffered minor injuries and a police vehicle was damaged.

    Suffolk Police were contacted by the ambulance service at 22:00 on 18 December, following reports of two seriously injured men on Foundation Street. 

    The men were taken to hospital in a critical condition. Both are now recovering. 

    Eight other people, from Ipswich and Luton, are on police bail pending further inquiries.

  18. Level crossing crash: Passengers escorted off trainpublished at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    I'm in Lidlington, Bedfordshire at the scene of the incident where a man has died after his car was hit by a train on a level crossing.

    The 11 passengers and two staff members who were on board at the time of the crash have been escorted off the train and into waiting taxis.

    The driver of the Bedford to Bletchley London Midland train looked visibly distraught.

    Emergency services are still on the scene.
