Brighton and Hove Albion have recalled goalkeeper Christian Walton from his loan spell at Luton Town, as a precautionary measure, following an injury to Niki Maenpaa.

Walton, 21, returns to provide back-up for first-team goalkeeper David Stockdale, while Maenpaa recovers from the shoulder injury sustained during Saturday's FA Cup tie at Lincoln City.

Manager Chris Hughton said: "While Niki's injury is not as bad as we first feared, he will be sidelined for a short period of time, and during his period of rehabilitation we will need goalkeeping cover for David Stockdale.

"Christian has been playing regularly at Luton Town and has really benefitted from his time there; ideally he would have continued, but he is now needed back here to ensure we have proper cover in the goalkeeping position."

Walton has played 33 times for Luton this season, adding to his four senior appearances for Albion, and ten games played on loan during spells at Bury and Plymouth Argyle.

  2. Motoring expert backs dirty number plate finepublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

There have been calls for drivers to make sure their car number plates can be clearly read after an Essex police officer tweeted she had fined a Harlow motorist whose plate was smeared in dirt.

Kevin Delaney, from The Institute of Advanced Motorists, external, said drivers must be identifiable on roads.

"It is entirely clear that the police should be getting on to people to keep their number plates clear - and if the way to do it is one or two high-profile fines like this, then it's a fair thing to do," he said.

In the past few minutes, and to add to the earlier list of transfers, Peterborough United have re-signed club legend Craig Mackail-Smith on loan from Luton until the end of the season.

It's Mackail Smith's third spell with Posh.

There is no doubt that the 32-year-old striker (pictured) is held in the highest regard by Posh supporters, but this still will be viewed by many as a left-field signing.

Mackail-Smith, who has joined on loan until the end of the season, has made just six appearances this term for parent club Luton.

He struggled during a fleeting loan stint with Posh in 2014 and was unable to get close to the form which made him such a potent goalscorer in his first spell at London Road.

Posh will argue that a player who is a tireless runner, a respected figure and a club legend can have a positive influence between now and the end of the season.

The supporters, who have been calling for an in-form, fit and firing front man may take more convincing.

  5. Busy week for Watford FCpublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Geoff Doyle
    BBC Three Counties Radio sport

What a week for Watford: dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall on Sunday with a so-called weakened team "bullied" according to midfielder Ben Watson; preparing for Graham Taylor's funeral in the town centre tomorrow; heading to in-form Arsenal tonight in the Premier League with no win in 7 and the manager under increasing pressure; and then deadline day to contend with.

There's likely to be plenty to keep them going on that front as well.

    Watford FCImage source, PA

Striker Odion Ighalo looks bound for China for around £20m, midfielder Adlene Guedioura is expected to leave for Hull for around £4m, Jerome Sinclair is linked with a loan move to Birmingham and there are whispers that goalkeeper Tim Krul could be on his way to Vicarage Road from Newcastle via Ajax where he's on loan, as cover for the injured Costel Pantilimon.

It's going to be a long day, but we'll keep you updated with any transfer news throughout the day.

BBC Sussex understands that Albion midfielder Rohan Ince is set for a loan move to League One Swindon Town on deadline day. Manager Chris Hughton has earmarked him for a move for some time after not breaking into the first team squad.

Talks continue at Brighton and Hove Albion to turn Glenn Murray's loan deal into a permanent move today. The agreement is being reported at around £3m.

Albion goalkeeper Nikki Maenpaa will be assessed after an injury at Lincoln on Saturday. The Seagulls could bring in cover today or recall Christian Walton from his loan at Luton Town.

  8. 3,000 people waiting more than 10 years for council housepublished at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

Over 3,000 people have been waiting for a council house in Luton for more than 10 years, according to figures compiled by The JVS Show on BBC Three Counties Radio

Nearly 12,000 people are currently on the overall waiting list.

The councillor in charge of housing in Luton, Labour's Tom Shaw, says the situation is the worst he's seen.

    Councillor Tom Shaw

Luton Borough Council say the figures are so high as there is a lack of brownfield sites for development, and lots of people earn too little to be able to afford private rents.

Councillor Tom Shaw said "Up to three years ago we were building 400-450 homes a year, over the next three years we're going to build 200 houses a year."

Elsewhere there are nearly 1,500 people on the Bedford and Central Bedfordshire waiting lists, and over 600 in Milton Keynes.

In Hertfordshire, the combined figure for East and North Herts, and Welwyn Hatfield is over 5,500.

    Simon Oxley
    BBC Three Counties Radio

Businesses in Borehamwood are being told to take legal action against their local council in an ongoing row about rent increases.

One printing business is closing today after the owner said Hertsmere Borough Council had increased his rent from £6,000 to £25,000 a year.

    Deadline ReprographicsImage source, Google

David Bowman who runs Deadline Reprographics said he was left with "no choice" but to close the business after the 300% rent increase.

Richard Butler is the leader of the Labour group on the Conservative-run council.

He said: "It's important for the council to keep local businesses going. What concerns me is how quickly they're putting these rents up.

"We've advised local businesses to get an independent surveyor and then take legal action."

We've contacted Hertsmere Borough Council for comment.

Mrs Turner is campaigning for grandparents to have legal rights in family disputes.

Currently grandparents do not have the automatic right to see their grandchildren if there are family fall-outs, divorce between parents or children are taken into care.

Today she will be lobbying MPs and has the support of Dame Esther Rantzen and the Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South, Iain Stewart (pictured with Mrs Turner).

  20. Patrick Maloney murder trial: Prosecutor tells court 'a vehicle can be a weapon'published at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2017

A man accused of murdering a fellow traveller as part of an ongoing feud said the victim had been holding a machete and attacking vehicles with three or four others on the day he died.

Prosecutor Miranda Moore told Luton Crown Court that Christopher McCarthy, 22, told police he had driven at Patrick Maloney expecting him to get out of the way.

Mr Maloney died later the same night – 2 August last year – after being dragged under a van at Toddbury Farm near Leighton Buzzard, the court heard.

"This was a deliberate course of the most terrible driving with the most awful results. A vehicle is a weapon just as much as a knife or club," said the prosecutor.

Mr McCarthy denies murder and his brother, Thomas, denies causing actual bodily harm. They both lived at the adjacent Greenacres site.

The case has been adjourned until Tuesday.
