I spent several hours with Steve this morning, seeing what can be done to find him somewhere to live, after he spent his first night on the streets of Milton Keynes last night.

He says he's always worked and is finding his current situation very difficult.

  17. Watford rail landslip report cites similar 1940s incidentpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    Carol Abercrombie
    BBC Three Counties Radio

A report into the landslip and collision on a railway line in Hertfordshire last September, says Network Rail failed to identify a risk despite a previous incident many years before.

The landslip, following torrential rain, caused a train to derail at the Hunton Bridge tunnel north of Watford Junction at about 07:00 on 16 September.

The train from Milton Keynes to Euston was partially derailed after hitting the landslip - it was then clipped by a train going in the opposite direction.

Hundreds of commuters had to be rescued, but no-one was seriously injured.

Today's official report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, external (RAIB) says a landslip had occurred at the same location in 1940, also causing a derailment.

Engineers carrying out a slope protection project at the time of last year's accident were not aware of this.

Drawings from the 1940s, relating to a structure constructed to repair the slope were held in a Network Rail archive, but were not available to either Network Rail’s asset management team or the designers of a slope protection project which was ongoing at the time of the accident.

As a consequence, this project made no provision for drainage.

The report praises the swift action of staff, whilst urging Network Rail to improve drainage at this and similar sites.
