    Rather cloudy with scattered showers across the BBC East region this evening, with the rumble of thunder possible across Norfolk.

    Showers dying away after midnight for most, with clear spells later as the temperature dips to 6C (43F), although places like Santon Downham in Suffolk and Writtle in Essex could be lower.

    Friday will see a mainly dry start, but thickening cloud will bring outbreaks of rain, and then a mixture of sunshine and scattered heavy showers later.

    The temperature will peak at about 14C (57F).

    To mark the 50th birthday of Milton Keynes, the BBC is working with its council and local media on the MK People Awards.

    We’re asking people to nominate those they think are worthy of an award in one of six categories: charity, community, diversity and equality, health, sport and young achiever.

    You can make a make a nomination by clicking on this link, external up until 12 October, with the awards ceremony on 1 November.

    The awards are the brainchild of councillor Alex Walker, as a way of celebrating local people during the anniversary year.

    A man suspected of escaping from lawful custody has appeared before magistrates.

    Michael Ashley Presley, from Didcot, was charged following an incident at HMP Spring Hill on Tuesday.

    The 24-year-old is due to appear at Aylesbury Crown Court on 17 November.

    Sixteen people have been removed from an articulated tanker at the M1 northbound lorry park, by Newport Pagnell services.

    Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Service says its assisting police and the ambulance services and searched inside the tanker, which contained small plastic pellets.

    One appliance and crew from Newport Pagnell, one from Broughton, three Urban Search and Rescue vehicles from Aylesbury and an officer attended.

    Firefighters used respirators, gas monitors, working-at-height gear, shovels, crowbars and lighting.

    The number of officers at Woodhill Prison has fallen by 18% in the last five years.

    The figures for the maximum security jail in Milton Keynes were revealed by the government's prisons minister Sam Gyimah in Parliament this week.

    Last year, seven inmates killed themselves at Woodhill, more than in any other prison in the UK.

    In March 2012, 700 staff worked at Woodhill. That number is now 575.

    Mr Gyimah said that the government has committed to recruit a net increase of 2,500 prison officers by December 2018.

    Praise has been given to Grendon Prison in Buckinghamshire for the way it deals with long term inmates, in a new report, external.

    Peter Clarke, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons found that most inmates felt safe, incidents of violence were rare, relationships between staff and prisoners were excellent and the inspector said this underpinned much that was positive about Grendon.

    The main negative finding was the automated sanitation system, which only allows one prisoner to go to the toilet at once during the night.

    HMP Grendon, external is a category B jail which holds more than 200 men serving long or life sentences and who are undergoing training to address their offending behaviour.

    A popular judge at St Albans crown court has died suddenly, after being taken ill.

    Judge John Plumstead, 64, known for his quick wit, passed away in hospital on Wednesday night.

    Among the notable cases he heard involved the N-Dubz singer Dappy, who he told to "behave" after he failed to turn up for a meeting with a probation officer.

    He also heard the trial of TV personality Justin LeeCollins who had harassed a former partner.

    He's just made the journey from Blackpool Zoo to meet the lady camels at Woburn Safari Park, external in Bedfordshire.

    In fact, Khan's amorous intentions could help boost the endangered Bactrian camel species. They're the ones with two humps.

    The six-year-old is the first male camel to move to Woburn in 15 years. He's being introduced to two resident females.

    Woburn's Chris Smart said: "The arrival of Khan is very exciting - we hope we will see a new baby in the future.

    "Bactrian camels are critically endangered, with only around 900 left in the wild in Mongolia and China, so ex-situ conservation is essential to help ensure their future survival."

    The boss of Luton-based Vauxhall's new French owners has urged the government to speed up Brexit talks, as they plan for the future of plants in Luton and Ellesmere Port.

    It's just weeks since the PSA Group, the company behind Peugeot and Citroen, completed its takeover of Vauxhall and Opel.

    The Duke of Cambridge will visit Milton Keynes later this month as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the "New City".

    Prince William will unveil a pillar at the commemorative Milton Keynes Rose in Campbell Park on the 26 September.

    The Rose features a calendar of days important to local people represented by pillars arranged as a flower.
