    A child is in a life-threatening condition after a crash near Leighton Buzzard where the occupants fled the scene.

    A Seat Leon was in collision with a Vauxhall Meriva on the A505 between Stanbridge Road and the junction with the B440 at about 18:20 on Sunday.

    The people in the Leon got out and fled.

    PC Rob Hauxwell said: "I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or who could help us identify the driver to contact us."

    There'll be a few isolated showers but otherwise, it'll be largely dry overnight across the BBC East region with clear spells and temperatures in rural areas possibly dropping a couple of degrees below 9C (48F).

  3. Plans for heat from waste plant for consultation at drop-inpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    An application has been lodged with the Environment Agency for an energy-from-waste incinerator plant at Rookery Pit, part of a former brick works, in Stewartby near Bedford.

    The agency has responsibility to ensure the facilities are designed, built and run to meet legal environmental standards and monitors operations so they comply with the conditions of a permit.

    A public consultation period on the proposal by Covanta Energy Limited will run 11 September-23 October.

    A drop-in is being held on Wednesday, 20 September at Forest of Marston Vale Centre in Marston Moretaine for the public to find out about the agency's role in the project.

    The agency will only issue a permit if it is satisfied that the plant, external will be designed, built, operated and maintained according to the relevant EU directives and that human health and the environment are protected, a spokesman said.

  4. M1 shut after lorry crosses carriageway and collides with vehiclespublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    The M1 is closed in both directions between J15 and J14 near Milton Keynes due to a crash involving a lorry which has crossed the carriageway and collided with other vehicles at about 15:00.

    The East Midlands Ambulance Service has sent three crews and the air ambulance to the motorway

    Northamptonshire Police have closed the road for the emergency services' activity.

    They are advising motorists to avoid the M1 between Northampton and Milton Keynes.

    Traffic travelling northbound is advised to leave the motorway at J14 and follow signs onto the A509 to the A5/A509 roundabout. Then, they must taker the A5 to the A508/A5/A422 Old Stratford Roundabout and continue on A508 to re-join the M1 at J15.

    Traffic travelling southbound is able to follow the northbound diversion in reverse direction from J15.

    Motorists are advised to allow extra journey time or to seek an alternative route.

    A giant 21lb (9.9kg) fat cat left with an animal charity that normally looks after emaciated animals is looking for a new home with owners who can keep him on a strict diet.

    Sergeant Harry Tubbs - or Harry for short - is twice the weight of an average cat and was signed over into the RSPCA's care after his previous owner could no longer care for him.

    The South Bedfordshire branch manager Alison Sutton said: "We were told by a vet that he is 80% overweight as a result of being overfed.

    "He's on a diet now, but he will have quite a way to go before he is at his ideal weight, although we have every faith that he will reach his target.

    "It is difficult getting him to exercise, but in time he will start to have more energy and be able to move easier.

    "We're sure he will find his perfect home soon, with owners who will be committed to keeping him on track with his diet."

  6. Pedestrian dies after being hit by a car on A5published at 15:16 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    A man has died after being hit by a car on the A5 in the early hours of Sunday near Dunstable.

    The pedestrian was walking along the road at about 03:00 when he was hit by a Volvo C30 travelling north towards Dunstable.

    Emergency services attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Next of kin have been informed and police have appealed for witnesses. They want to trace a cyclist who rode past just moments before the crash, a spokesman said.

    Milton Keynes Lightning ice hockey team, playing their first ever match in the top flight at Planet Ice, beat the Belfast Giants 6-3 in the Elite League, external on Sunday evening.

    The Giants were always chasing the game against Lightning as goals from Kevin Gibson and Kevin King put Lightning 2-0 up within the first seven minutes at the Milton Keynes Arena.

    Guillaume Doucet and Lewis Hook extended the Milton Keynes lead to 4-1 within five minutes of the half time restart.

    Lightning keeper Miika Wiikman made a number of fine saves to maintain a slender lead after Giant strikes.

    But Doucet's second goal with just over two minutes remaining sealed victory.

    A full-size model of the type of train that will be introduced on lines across East Anglia will be unveiled later today at the Bombardier factory in Derby.

    As part of its bid to retain the rail franchise for the region, Abellio Greater Anglia agreed to boost rolling stock by more than 600 units (engines or carriages) built in Britain.

    They will travel between Norwich, Cambridge and London through Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire.

    The firm has also undertaken to reduce journey times. At least four 90-minute services (two in each direction) will be run between London and Norwich each weekday and two 60-minute services between Ipswich and London.

    Facilities for commuters will also receive a boost with wifi available on the new units.

    Abellio's contract runs until 2025.
