A joint statement from Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Affinity Water (which serves a population of more than 3.6m people, including parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex) said they were "experiencing exceptionally high levels of demand for water due to multiple bursts on networks and an increase in leaks in and on customer properties".

They are asking those customers who still have water coming through to use as little as possible while they get things back to normal.

Thames Water - which serves London and the Thames Valley - said: "We continue to pump as much extra water into our network as we can, however we still have several hundred jobs to complete and this work will be taking place over the course of this week."
