Senior West Midland firefighter dies suddenly on holidaypublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 17 August 2016
A senior firefighter in the West Midlands has died after suffering a heart attack on holiday.
Watch commander John Sale, a fire officer at Canley Fire Station in Coventry, was with his family in St David's in Wales when he fell ill.
He was taken to hospital but died this morning, West Midlands Fire Service said, external.
Mr Sale, who was in his 50s, joined the brigade in 1994 as a recruit, originally training at Coventry Fire Station before moving to Willenhall Fire Station.
During his career he also served at Walsall, Wednesbury and Foleshill fire stations, headquarters, the brigade's command development centre and finally on green watch at Canley Fire Station.
Quote MessageJohn was a true family man at heart who loved the open outdoors, walking, climbing, windsurfing and walking his dog. He had many a good adventure with his best friend, watch commander Dave Smith. I have been overwhelmed by the amount of messages I have received from friends in the Fire Service looking back on John’s life with so much respect and admiration for him. John will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
Robert Mair,, Canley station commander
Fire stations will fly their flags at half-mast until Thursday evening as a mark of respect.
