    Last summer 89 large owls swooped into Birmingham as part of a public art project that raised money for Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity.

    A light and photography installation opens at Lichfield Cathedral this evening.

    He says the proposed powers of the new mayor don't go far enough and that any power will be 'hampered' by the overriding authority of the cabinet.

  8. Dangerous driver jailed after city centre police chasepublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    A man who drove dangerously through Birmingham city centre mounting the pavement to avoid the police has been jailed for eight months.

    Kazim Mahmood Ibrahim, from Haringey in north London, was weaving and speeding through traffic in a Black Mercedes.

    A police stinger stopped the 27-year-old, but police had to chase after him when he ran off.

    He was banned from driving for 16 months.

    West Brom's £15m move for West Ham striker Diafra Sakho is off because the player has a back problem.

    It is understood the Senegalese did not fail his medical but he would not have been fit for the start of the season.

    With the Sakho deal now off, Berahino, 23 today, will remain at the club.

    Forty years ago many of the beauty spots of the Midlands were ablaze as the region experienced its hottest weather since records began. 

    The effects of the Summer of 1976 are still being felt to this day in places like Sutton Park near Birmingham where a series of fires ravaged the landscape.

    Birmingham singer-songwriter Laura Mvula is among the 12 artists to be shortlisted for this year's Mercury Music Prize., external

    The album The Dreaming Room was released in June and features the single Overcome featuring Nile Rodgers. It follows her debut LP Sing to the Moon which was shortlisted three years ago.

    A man from Birmingham has been jailed for nine years after admitting to a serious sexual assault on a teenager more than 30 years ago.

    David Green, 60, from Moseley in Birmingham, who admitted charges of kidnap, serious sexual assault and false imprisonment has been jailed for nine years.

    The victim said she was "too scared to scream" during the assault but still managed to provide crucial information about her attacker, including a description of a tattoo on his arm.
