  1. Pair trapped in car that crashed into lamppost, leaving one with head injurypublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    Two people suffered serious injuries and were left trapped in their car after it crashed into a lamppost last night, West Midlands Ambulance Service says.

    Crews were called to Dudley Port, Tipton shortly after 23:35.

    A spokesman said: “Two patients were left trapped in the car following the collision, having to be cut free by the fire service. Crews were told the car also collided with a post box after crashing into the lamppost."

    The driver, a woman in her teens, was treated at the scene for a suspected fractured jaw before being transported to hospital.

    The passenger, a man believed to be in his 20s, was also taken to hospital. He was treated at the scene for a serious head injury and back pain.

  5. Conservation work on Staffordshire Hoard set to endpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    Conservation work on the Staffordshire Hoard is set to finish this month, marking the seventh anniversary of its discovery. The hoard is the world's largest collection of gold and silver Anglo-Saxon treasure. Archaeologists have spent years working on the thousands of pieces that were discovered in a farmer's field near Lichfield in 2009. Pieta Greaves, Staffordshire Hoard Conservation Coordinator, (featured in video) says they've now been able to put many of the fragments together for the first time.

    A rare puppet collection has been saved for the nation – and is about to go on display.

    Michael Dixon from Bridgnorth is the Archivist of the British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild and owns the national puppetry archive.  He keeps it in a secret location, but it’s going on display in Wolverhampton, thanks to lottery money.

    Michael's collection includes, external several Muffin the Mules and Spitting Image puppets.

    A UKIP leadership candidate and West Midlands MEP is calling for all halal and kosher meat to be stunned before slaughter. 

    Bill Etheridge says he's concerned about the welfare of the animals butchered for Muslim and Jewish people to eat. 

    But Naved Syed, who advises companies on the buying and selling of Halal meat in the West Midlands, says there's no such thing as kind killing.

  9. Home ownership fall a result of prices 'detached from people's earnings'published at 09:55 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    The metropolitan West Midlands has recorded a double-digit fall in home ownership since a peak in the early 2000s, analysis suggests.

    The Resolution Foundation said homes were becoming increasingly unaffordable for struggling potential buyers and the situation was no longer just a "London-centric issue".

    Matthew Whittaker, chief economist from the think tank, told the BBC's Today programme: "What we particularly have seen since 2002-03 is that incomes simply haven't kept pace with house prices, so it's not just that house prices have gone up.  

    "We have this sense now that house prices have become detached from people's earnings... and we no longer have the route through 100% mortgages and the like for getting on to the housing ladder."

  12. Home ownership falling says think tankpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    A new study concludes that levels of home ownership are as low as they were in the 1980s, with the West Midlands one of the areas most affected. 

    In the last 11 years, levels have dropped in the region from just over 70% to 59%.

    The social policy research group, The Resolution Foundation, says the biggest shift towards renting, in recent years, has been in major cities, such as Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.
