    Proposals that could see paramedics at West Midlands Ambulance Service, external wear cameras on their kit, could help cut the number of attacks on staff, according to an academic.

    Dr Alex Sutherland, external from RAND Europe, a policy research institute, says more work needs to be done to see if they actually do cut the number of attacks.

    The investigation into the death of Dalian Atkinson by the Independent Police Complaints Commission will take nine months, an inquest into his death has been told.

    Mr Atkinson had been Tasered by police - two officers have been suspended while a criminal investigation is carried out.

    The inquest, which opened this morning, also heard that doctors had tried to give Mr Atkinson CPR for 35 minutes, before he was pronounced dead at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.

    An inquest has opened into the death of the former Aston Villa footballer, Dalian Atkinson.

    Mr Atkinson, of Holly Road in the Dawley area of Telford, died shortly after being Tasered outside his father's home in the town just over a week ago and a full inquest has now been scheduled for three months' time.

    His death is the subject of an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and two police officers have been suspended.

    No cause of death was given this morning and more tests have been ordered after an initial post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.

  11. Ambulance staff could get body-worn cameras after rise in attackspublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

    Paramedics in the West Midlands could be given wearable video cameras, after an increase in attacks when they are on duty.

    Ambulances have already been fitted with CCTV to record offenders.

    Almost 300 members of staff were physically assaulted across the region last year.

    Steve Elliker, head of security and safety at West Midlands Ambulance Service, said most attacks happened away from existing CCTV cameras.
