  2. Senior West Midland firefighter dies suddenly on holidaypublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    A senior firefighter in the West Midlands has died after suffering a heart attack on holiday. 

    Watch commander John Sale, a fire officer at Canley Fire Station in Coventry, was with his family in St David's in Wales when he fell ill.

    He was taken to hospital but died this morning, West Midlands Fire Service said, external

    Mr Sale, who was in his 50s, joined the brigade in 1994 as a recruit, originally training at Coventry Fire Station before moving to Willenhall Fire Station.

    During his career he also served at Walsall, Wednesbury and Foleshill fire stations, headquarters, the brigade's command development centre and finally on green watch at Canley Fire Station.

    John was a true family man at heart who loved the open outdoors, walking, climbing, windsurfing and walking his dog. He had many a good adventure with his best friend, watch commander Dave Smith. I have been overwhelmed by the amount of messages I have received from friends in the Fire Service looking back on John’s life with so much respect and admiration for him. John will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

    British actors Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance are starring in Ready Player One, which is being filmed in Digbeth.

    If you look closely you can see Steven Spielberg in a white hat among the crew.

    The remains of the Warner Brothers set are still here but are being packed away this morning.

    I'm told most of the filming was done under a railway bridge in Floodgate Street and "perfect for what they want", as the film is set in 2044.

    A woman's suffered a serious injury after her motorbike collided with a car in Featherstone , externalthis morning. 

    West Midlands Ambulance Service say they were called at 07:55 to Baneberry Drive and found the woman next to her bike and a car "with significant damage to its side".

    They say she was fully conscious and treated for a serious leg injury and cuts to her arm before being airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. 

    Paramedics also treated the car's driver and a bus driver who'd seen the crash for shock.

    A skip firm has been fined £600,000 and its owner given a two-year suspended sentence after a worker was killed falling from a skip, say police, external

    Bikram Mahli, from Yale Road in Willenhall, was found guilty of manslaughter and gross negligence, and admitted employer breach of general duty at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday. 

    He was also fined £10,000 and banned from being a director of a company for 10 years.

    The West Midlands was one of only two regions in the UK to see unemployment rise between April and June, official figures indicate.

    Across the UK the total fell by 52,000 to 1.64 million - in the West Midlands it increased by 18,000 to 173,000, external compared with January to March. 

    The only other region to see unemployment rise was London where it rose by 7,000 people.

    Police have arrested two more teenagers on suspicion of the murder of a 41-year-old man in Dudley.

    West Midlands Police say, external they arrested a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old last night in connection with the death of Simon Johnson, who was found with stab wounds at a property in Cradley Road, Netherton, last Thursday.

    The older teen continues to be questioned, while the 15-year-old has been released on bail.

    Two other teenagers arrested over the death have been released on bail. Police continue to appeal for witnesses.
