    For decades it has been thought there were too many hospitals in Birmingham and too much duplication.

    A merger or acquisition involving the Queen Elizabeth and Heart of England trusts could help streamline services. 

    Clearly, with the need to save hundreds of millions from the health budget, that has concentrated minds yet further.

    There are fears however that Heartlands Hospital, which serves some of the poorest people in Birmingham, could be the loser in such a deal. 

    One GP in east Birmingham told me he was extremely worried the more affluent hospitals in south Birmingham, Solihull and Good Hope could be protected at the expense of his patients.

    A boy was injured when he became trapped on a baggage belt in the arrivals hall at Birmingham Airport.

    Paramedics said the youngster climbed on to the belt on Sunday afternoon, leading to the boy’s father also getting on to try to retrieve him.

    An ambulance was called and the child and father were treated at the scene before the boy was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

    The boy suffered arm and leg injuries and his father a knee injury, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

  5. Two women driven off by robbers who car-jacked thempublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 5 September 2016

    A woman aged 88 and another, 37, were driven off by the robbers who car-jacked them.

    The offenders struck in Stourbridge last night, targeting the Ford Mondeo in which the women had been travelling.

    The car was parked at the One Stop shop, Hungary Hill, as occupants used the cash machine. It was just what the robbers - who had raided the store wearing masks and wielding hammers - needed for a getaway when their own car stalled.

    The vehicle had gone several yards, police said, external, when the unwanted passengers were spotted on the back seat, before being dumped on the roadside. Police added they were left "terribly shaken" by the ordeal.

  6. Family wins £100k in Lotto draw celebrating Olympic successpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2016

    A mother and her two daughters in Wolverhampton have won £100k on a National Lottery draw that celebrated Team GB's Olympic success.

    Christine Hudson, 57, and daughters Natasha and Katy, won the money in last month's Lotto Medal Draw.

    The winning ticket was cashed in after being hidden under a pillow, in a purse, in a drawer and then a box.

    The family says the money will "take the pressure off everyday life".

    Police officers carrying any kind of weapons should be required to wear body cameras, Telford MP Lucy Allan has told parliament. 

    She referred to the case of former Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson who died after he was tasered by police in the town last month.

    The MP said cameras would be in the interests of both the police and the public.

    Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis replied that it was a matter for the police to decide and that it would be wrong for him to comment while an IPCC investigation was ongoing.

    A graffiti artist from Australia is busy at work painting futuristic looking murals on the walls around Livery Street, Newhall Street and Lionel Street.

    This morning crews were busy setting up.

    And if you remember, it was only a couple of weeks ago he was in Digbeth filming his new blockbuster Ready Player One.

    Kimberley has just spotted him in the Jewellery Quarter where filming has started in the Lionel Street area. He's even got time for a little wave!
