  2. Your Questions: Were uni's coal mines used as bomb shelters?published at 18:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    Journalist, BBC Online

Zeb used Your Questions to ask: "Did the University of Birmingham convert its coal mines into a bomb shelter?"

We got in touch with Luke Harrison at the university to do some digging.

He said: "I know there is certainly discussion about provision of air raid shelters, including references in the wonderful diaries of Sir Raymond Priestley, Vice Chancellor and in the minutes of the Finance and General Purposes committee.

"I haven't found any references to the mines being used in the catalogue listings we have so far and I would have expected to see this noted as a point of interest.

"There are about a mile of phoney coalmine snakes beneath campus. It was built in 1905 to give mining students experience of working underground."

  5. Tony Pulis court battle: Conduct was 'disgraceful'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016
    published at 17:29 28 November 2016

The conduct of West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis over the way he left a former club has been described as "disgraceful" by arbitrators.

A Premier League Managers' Arbitration Tribunal had ruled earlier this year that he should pay £3.7m in damages to Crystal Palace over his departure at the start of 2014-15 season. Mr Pulis said it was unfair and mounted a challenge in the High Court but a judge ruled against him.

Details of the case have emerged in a written ruling published by Sir Michael Burton today.

Crystal Palace claimed Pulis deceived them into paying a £2m bonus

Pulis had a contract with the south London club which promised him a £2m bonus if he kept them in the Premier League at the end of the 2013-14 season and stayed in the manager's job until 31 August 2014.

He secured Palace's place in the top flight but did not stay until the required date, instead asking for the bonus earlier than agreed and then informing the club a day later he wanted to leave.

The arbitration panel concluded it was satisfied Pulis intended to give the club the "false impression" that he had a pressing, personal need for the money and that "he knew or was reckless to the fact that the impression he was giving to the club was a false one".

    published at 16:53 28 November 2016

A man has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a car crashed, killing a passenger in Bartley Green, Birmingham.

The 22-year-old is also accused of drink driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified in connection with the collision in which the vehicle hit bollards and a parked van. It had, police say, failed to stop for officers.

A woman in her 20s − a back seat passenger in the car − was confirmed dead at the scene. A front seat passenger was taken to hospital with a broken foot.

It happened on Adams Hill just before 03.00 on Saturday.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

I'll have a special Midlands Today report on concerns that building the high-speed rail network HS2 could disrupt the region's roads.

HS2 crosses several motorways under the proposed project. Transport bosses are worried about the impact on already congested networks.

The West Midlands Combined Authority says HS2 will lead to new jobs in the long term - but there will be pain while the work takes place.

  14. Pub bombings victim's sister: Justice 'imbalanced towards the state'published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016
    published at 14:43 28 November 2016

A woman whose sister was killed in the Birmingham pub bombings says difficulty in securing legal funding ahead of reopened inquests amounts to "an imbalance" of justice.

Julie Hambleton lost her sister Maxine in the 1974 blasts in which a further 20 people died and, at a pre-inquest hearing this morning, coroner Peter Thornton QC backed the funding fight of families who were knocked-back in efforts to have their legal fees covered and legal aid secured.

    Quote Message

Having a man of his stature support us in such a way, it is now on public record but also if we don't get this funding that will mean that the imbalance of the scales of justice are so bent in one direction towards the state, the inquest cannot possibly move forward."
