    What were you doing 40 years ago today? 

    There's a chance you might have been part of a bit of musical history as Abba took to the stage of the Birmingham Odeon to play their first live concert in the UK.

    Demand for tickets was huge, with more than 50,000 fans clamoring for just over 2,000 seats.

    Two men tricked an 80-year-old woman and stolen more than £3,000 from her house by posing as fence repairers, external, police say.

    Officers say they knocked at the victim's door on Oakdene Avenue, Burntwood on Wednesday morning.

    One of them looked at the fence and made her an offer to repair it, watching her go to a cupboard to collect cash. 

    They say he then asked her to open a door and stole £3,100 before the pair left.

    City Road in Birmingham will remain closed until at least 20:00 following a fatal house fire, West Midlands Fire Service says as it continues its investigations into the blaze. 

    Emergency services were called to City Road in the Edgbaston area at about 04.40.

    A spokesman said firefighters were battling a fire affecting two properties.  

    A 75-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

  4. Barnt Green train death: Victim travelled from Irelandpublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    The 29-year-old woman who died at Barnt Green railway station yesterday was from Dublin and had travelled from Ireland, British Transport Police say.

    Police say the woman, who hasn't yet been named, arrived on a ferry from Ireland into Holyhead in the early hours of yesterday, before getting a coach to Birmingham.

    Police say she was then spotted on CCTV at New Street station with a man at around 05:30. 

    The pair are understood to have been trying to get to Worcester and boarded a Redditch-bound service shortly before 06:00, getting off at Barnt Green, where they tried to walk across the line to another platform.

    She was hit by a train at around 06:55 - police have now released a CCTV image of the man who was with her, who they say is a "key witness".

    A CCTV image of a "key witness" to the death of a woman at Barnt Green railway station yesterday has been released by British Transport Police.

    The woman, aged 29 and from Dublin, died after being struck by a train at around 06:55.

    British Transport Police say her death is not believed to be suspicious and witness reports say she was seen trying to cross the tracks with a man when she was struck.

    Officers have been tracing her final movements and have uncovered a CCTV image from Birmingham New Street of a man they would like to speak to about the incident.

    It appears the man made it to the other side but sadly, the woman was struck and died at the scene. I would like to stress he is not in any trouble – we just need to talk to him."

    Images have been released by police, external in connection with an investigation into a bottle attack in a Birmingham bar that left a man with a damaged artery. 

    The victim was drinking in Sobar at The Arcadian complex when he was hit over the head from behind. 

    The 20-year-old needed emergency surgery to repair a damaged artery and he sustained neck and facial injuries.

    It happened in the early hours of Friday 30 December.

    They won for the first time under new manager Gianfranco Zola against Fulham at the weekend.

    A motorbiker who fell off his bike in Lichfield and suffered serious injuries, external remains in hospital in a stable condition. 

    Staffordshire Police say the 58-year-old was pulling out of Dimbles Lane on to Eastern Avenue yesterday morning when it happened. 

    The force says he suffered serious chest injuries and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by air ambulance. 

    Officers say no other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

    Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy goes head-to-head on Saturday with one of his closest friends in football tomorrow - Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce.

    The pair, who have six promotions to the Premier League between them, have played and managed against each other on numerous occasions.

    McCarthy believes Villa made the perfect choice when they appointed Bruce in October.

    "They went looking everywhere and trying to get sexy options and I guess me and Brucey aren't too sexy, but we know what we're doing and we've done good jobs wherever we've been," he said. 

    "Steve will turn it around, without any doubt."

    We're enjoying a trip down memory lane today as it's 40 years since Abba played their first UK gig in Birmingham

    Rafael Cavar, who wrote about the gig on the website Birmingham Music Archive, external, said: "The demands were so high they could have sold out the Odeon over 10 times.

    "I was very lucky to get my ticket on the black market outside the Odeon at a fair price.

    "People were paying over £100 (40 times the face value), which was a fortune in those days."

  16. Peace man: Calls for Dudley activist memorialpublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    There are calls for a permanent memorial to the peace campaigner Bert Bissell, who climbed Ben Nevis on VJ day in 1945.

    Bert from Dudley continued his walks for many decades afterwards and raised thousands for charity, building a Peace Cairn (a stack of stones) at the summit of the mountain. 

    Supporters are today launching a memorial society and are campaigning for a blue plaque near his home.
