  1. West Midlands Police reminds public national threat level remains 'severe' published at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    Members of the public have been reminded by police the security threat level nationally remains unchanged at "severe", meaning an attack is "highly likely".

    The West Midlands force has asked residents to "remain alert and not alarmed". 

    It said concerns should be reported to a confidential anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

    West Midlands Police's statement on their action overnight suggested more than one location in Birmingham had been raided, external , but the force has refused to confirm a number.

    Residents have told how more than a dozen black-clad police with machine guns smashed their way in to a second-floor flat in Hagley Road, Birmingham, at about 23:00 GMT on Wednesday.

    Stuart Bailey, who lives four doors down, was going for a drink with his friend when an armed officer shouted for him to "Go left". 

    The 25-year-old said: "There were a load of armed police in the street and on the pavement and I could see three or four in front of me. 

    "They were all dressed in black and armed with what looked like MP5s (submachine guns) and one of them had six ammunition magazines strapped to his leg. 

    "I wasn't allowed back in my property for an hour." 

    Another man who lives in a neighbouring flat said he was "scared and frightened" when he glanced out of the window and saw about a dozen armed police wearing Kevlar helmets and body armour in the street. 

    The man, who declined to be named, criticised the area saying it was "very unhygienic and at night there are rats - but it's cheap. People come and go all the time".

  5. West Midlands Police moves to reassure the public in wake of terror attack-linked raid published at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    Police have moved to reassure residents in the wake of last night's raid in Hagley Road, Birmingham, linked to the Westminster terror attack.

    Officers made "intelligence-led" raids, the West Midlands force said, and "there was no immediate risk to public safety". 

    Extra officers will be out on patrol over the next few days, but the force stressed this was "not based on any new or emerging intelligence".

    When we contacted West Midlands Police about the raid in Hagley Road, Birmingham, they told us it was to do with Scotland Yard.

    What we can confirm is that there's a link between what happened here last night and what happened in Westminster yesterday.

    We also know the car used in Westminster was hired in Solihull.

    Police  stormed a second-floor flat above a row of shops  in Hagley Road at about 23:00 GMT on Wednesday.

    After armed officers swooped on the address, non-uniformed police officers were spotted taking pieces of equipment into the property.  

    A witness told the Press Association: "They came and arrested three men."
