    A portrait is slowly emerging of the man responsible for the Westminster terror attack on Wednesday.

    What we know about Khalid Masood, named by the Metropolitan police, is:

    • He was 52, born in Kent, and lived most recently in the West Midlands
    • He was known by several aliases although they have not been released by officers
    • He rented the car used in the attack on Westminster Bridge from an Enterprise rent-a-car branch in Spring Hill, Birmingham, giving his profession as a "teacher" when he did so
    • He was known to police with previous convictions for public order offences, causing grievous bodily harm, causing criminal damage but not for any previous terror offences

    We know the man responsible for the terrorist attack at Westminster - which claimed the lives of a police officer and two pedestrians who have been named today - was born in Britain and had been investigated by the security services. 

    The Metropolitan Police named him as 52-year-old Khalid Masood who was born in Kent, but more recently had been living in the West Midlands. 

    So-called Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for the killings, is describing him as one of its "soldiers".

    He had been on MI5's radar and had been investigated in the past over concerns about violent extremism, but Theresa May says he was a "peripheral figure" and police said there was no prior intelligence about the attack. 

    Police are also trying to establish who - if anyone - was helping him. 

    Raids have been carried out in Birmingham and London. Eight people have been arrested, at least four of whom were in Birmingham.

    Enterprise car hire firm has confirmed the vehicle used by the attacker was hired at its Spring Hill branch in Birmingham.

    Khalid Masood personally hired the car used in the Westminster attack from a branch of Enterprise Car Rental in Spring Hill, Birmingham, according to BBC sources. 

    Masood gave his profession as "teacher" when renting the Hyundai SUV.

    There was "no prior intelligence" about a terrorist's intention to mount Wednesday's attack in Westminster, police have said.

    The Metropolitan force has made the move to name Khalid Masood, aged 52, who was born in Kent but had been living in the West Midlands.

    It might seem an unusual step, but the reason they have done this is to encourage people who know him to come forward and give information about his previous movements.

    Anyone with information is urged to call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

    Police have named the man responsible for the Westminster terror attack as Khalid Masood.

    The 52-year-old was from Kent but had been living in the West Midlands and was also known by a number of aliases.

    They said he was not the subject of any criminal investigation at the time but was known to police.

    He had a range of previous convictions for causing grievous bodily harm, public order offences and criminal damage, but the most relevant one to Wednesday's events was for possession of a knife in September 2003.

    Officers stressed he had not been convicted of any previous terror offences.

    Officers have also been seen rooting through flower beds in what appears to be the communal block of flats.

    Police are searching a property in Winson Green.

    Officers arrived in the early hours. A neighbour does not think there were any arrests but he saw police taking wheelie bins into the back garden.

    Police would not comment over questions as to whether the search is linked with the Westminster terror attack.

    I am at the Hagley Road flat which was raided by police investigating the Westminster terror attack.

    I've seen another five officers go in carrying boxes with their equipment to continue investigations.

    It's a building in multiple occupancy and there are lots of flats and bedsits. Exactly which one or how many are being searched we don't know.

    Police have refused to confirm or deny whether activity in Quayside, Winson Green, is linked to the London attack.

    The BBC is heading to the scene following reports of a raid at an address in the street.

    I've spoken to West Midlands Police and Scotland Yard who have both refused to comment at this stage.
