    Quote Message

We are a champion of international free trade and when you look at the world as it's developing now, 90% of global growth is being generated outside of the EU and that's where a lot of our prosperity will come from. We are focusing the UK on that and the regions of the UK as well - £5bn over three years into Birmingham and the region could make a very big difference."

  13. Surgeon accused of unnecessary breast removals says "prepared to over-treat" published at 13:57 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

A surgeon accused of carrying out unnecessary mastectomies at West Midlands hospitals has told a court he would be prepared to "over-treat" a patient as if she had a bleak cancer diagnosis owing to her fear of the illness.

Ian Paterson, 59, said patient Doctor Rosemary Platt - whose breast he removed in 2001 - was "cancer-phobic", but prosecutors said the procedure was "quite unnecessary", with Nottingham Crown Court having previously heard she was under the impression she had cancer - rather than being at risk of developing it - after abnormalities had been found in lumps.

Mr Paterson,  from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, said all treatment options were presented to the "anxious lady" and "the way to protect herself was that she would do everything she could to maximise her protection".

He said her mastectomy "was carried out to prevent cancer, not treat it", telling the court he would be prepared to "over-treat" her as if her problems were "at the black end of the spectrum" because of her fears.

He denies 20 counts of wounding with intent against nine women and one man relating to procedures he carried out between 1997 and 2011 when he was working for hospitals run by the Heart of England NHS Trust and Spire Healthcare.

    The trial continues.
