  3. The pain of unnecessary breast operationspublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 28 April 2017

A victim of surgeon Ian Paterson has described the pain she suffered after undergoing unnecessary breast operations.

Rosemary Platt was referred to the 59 year old after finding a lump in her right breast in 1997.

A mammogram had indicated no malignant cells, but a potential increased risk of cancer suggested by a build-up of cells in her milk glands.

Despite being told the problem was being monitored by a breast specialist, Paterson carried out two "pointless" procedures - described by the victim as "one of the most painful things" she had experienced.

The operations were then followed by a "needless" mastectomy three years later after Ms Platt discovered another lump.

His colleagues first raised concerns in 2003, but despite several investigations he was allowed to continue operating until 2011.

Away from his patients, he was described as an "arrogant bully" and a poor team player.

He was domineering, often upsetting colleagues with his intimidating manner. Some surgeons left their jobs, blaming, in part, his attitude.

The BBC England Data Unit has been analysing how non-voters would play a pivotal role in the general election if they were to use the ballot box.

The West Midlands dominates the top end of English constituencies where non-voters most outnumbered winning parties.

The people too 'disillusioned' to vote in election

Among the findings following an analysis of the 2015 general election was that two seats in Birmingham, plus West Bromwich West and Walsall North all returned Labour MPs, yet between 13,000 and 17,000 more people failed to cast a valid vote than voted for the winner.

In some cases, the winning majority was small. In Walsall North, for example, Labour won in 2015 by fewer than 2,000 votes. Yet more than 30,000 eligible voters did not choose a candidate.
