  17. School to cut lesson time but 'teachers will not be working any less'published at 17:25 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    BBC WM

The deputy general secretary of a teachers' union says cutting school time is "not a decision taken lightly" by school leaders.

Malcolm Trobe, from the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), spoke to BBC WM after Selly Oak Trust School said its day would finish half an hour earlier due to education funding cuts.

    Quote Message

The teachers will not be working any less. Teachers are entitled to 10% of their working time for planning and preparation. At the moment [they] will use alternative teachers in order to free people to do their planning, prep and marking during the school day. They do a great deal in their own time, but they do have to have some time in working hours to do that."

Malcolm Trobe, Deputy general secretary of the ASCL

Mr Trobe added: "Teachers will do their best to ensure that pupils education is in no way affected, but schools have very little option."

In a statement, the Department for Education says: "The government has protected the core schools budget in real terms since 2010, with school funding at its highest level on record at almost £41b in 2017-18 - and that is set to rise."
