Wolves and Birmingham City have defended themselves after failing to meet a promise to interview black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates for managerial jobs.

The two clubs volunteered for the EFL pilot - based on American Football's Rooney Rule - which requires NFL teams to interview at least one qualified BAME candidate.

Wolves did so when they appointed Paul Lambert, but said it didn't happen during the appointment of Walter Zenga due to exceptional circumstances after the sale of the club.

Blues insisted they "abided by the agreement" when Harry Redknapp was brought in because the scheme allowed clubs to appoint "specific individuals" without a full recruitment process.

Satpal Singh Mahal, 49, from Walsall, was ordered to pay back £100,000 and chiropodist Louise Brown, 54, from Plymouth ordered to pay £100,684.43, the HMRC said.
