  9. Road closures cause a drop in trade, say local businessespublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 4 August 2017

    Leona Smart
    Broadcast Journalist, BBC WM

Shop owners in a village near Willenhall are worried about their businesses after what they say is a drop in customers since emergency roadworks started last week.

The diversions on High Road in Short Heath were put in place by Severn Trent Water after pipes burst, and it's likely to take a further five weeks to repair.

With cars avoiding the area, and the 'Road Closed' sign at the end of the road, the shops say they're struggling.

Wendy Perry who runs a craft shop says she no longer has any passing trade and the signs are confusing drivers "the road says closed but not telling people that businesses are open".

Eat Fresh cafe which is usually "really busy" as workmen come in to have a cooked breakfast is empty. Sarah-Jane Cooper who runs the cafe says she's struggling to get by as the closed road means no passing trade.

We’re working in Sandbeds Road in Willenhall to install brand new water pipes that will make sure local businesses and residents have a water supply they can rely on for the future. In order to allow engineers from Amey to work safely, we’ve had to close the road and have a diversion in place that has been agreed with the local council. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this is causing and we’ll work as quickly as possible to get everything back to normal.

We wouldn't want to say to the public that we're on the precipice of a settlement but certainly in the last few days I think it's fair to say that discussions have been open and honest and have proceeded in a positive manner and have given me some hope.

Howard Beckett,, Assistant general secretary for the Unite Union

Jacqui Kennedy, corporate director at the council said: "At the moment we don't want to promise something that we can't deliver. We are making sure that we have a systematic approach to cleaning the streets and collecting rubbish. We are on target to do that."
