But it is not the first time the company trip has been scuppered by airline troubles.

Staff at IT firm Zengenti, based in Ludlow, Shropshire, were booked for a weekend away at the beginning of November, flying from Birmingham to Lisbon, via Portugal and Manchester.

When one of Ryanair's flights was cancelled, they thought the holiday was over, but Monarch stepped in on Friday to say they could provide seats for the outbound journey.

    Quote Message

The holiday was saved, and then the holiday was decimated – and all in the space of a weekend. We’re all so frustrated and disappointed [about the holiday], but we feel really bad for the Monarch staff and just hope they’re all OK. I’ve told colleagues if I have to build a raft out of plastic bottles, I’ll get us a holiday somewhere
