    A mother who died in a fire at a block of flats in Stoke-on-Trent succumbed to smoke inhalation, police said.

    Staffordshire Police said the fire, which started in a ground floor flat, didn't spread and it was smoke that affected Zainab Adam, 36, and her two children.

    Aaron Barley had already pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Peter Wilkinson, injured in a triple stabbing which left his wife Tracey and 13-year-old son Pierce dead.

    Barley, who had been living on the streets in Stourbridge, had been helped by Mrs Wilkinson when she took pity on him in 2016.

    She had arranged for him to get a place in a hostel and for some months he was given meals at the family home.

    After losing his job and being evicted from his flat in March this year he returned to their home and attacked them, before stealing the family car and attempting to escape.

    A homeless man has pleaded guilty to murdering Tracey Wilkinson and her 13-year-old son Pierce at their home in Stourbridge.

    Aaron Barley, 24, had been helped by the family before he launched his attack.

    He pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court where he was due to stand trial.

    Around 30 firefighters were needed to tackle a blaze at Cafe Desi Express in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham, which has suffered 100% smoke damage, says the fire service.

    Crews were called to the scene around 01:00 last night to the fire on the ground and first floors of the building on Ladypool Road.

    Roads around the area were closed for fire investigators for a time, but have now re-opened.

    Mother-of-two Zainab Adam, who was 36, died in hospital after being rescued by firefighters from a blaze in the flats where she lived, Staffordshire Police confirmed this morning.

    Her six-year-old son and six-month-old daughter are still critically ill after the fire on Sunday.

    The fire, which damaged six flats in Ringland Close, Stoke-on-Trent, "started accidentally", said Staffordshire Fire Service.

    The number of hospital admissions in the city has increased by more than 70% in the past five years.

    Amelia Chalak, 19, an ambassador for the charity Headstart, will be talking about her mental health issues to encourage others to seek help.

    Armed officers seized "an array of offensive weapons" after a man was threatened with an axe in Stoke-on-Trent last night.

    Staffordshire Police say they were called to Yeaman Street at about 21:20 where they seized a hatchet axe, crossbow and "a bag of assorted knives" from a property.

    A spokesman said the victim was found in the street and was removed from the scene unharmed.

    A 43-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in custody, police say.

    The 12th Century cellar underneath Worcester Cathedral is to be opened up to the public for the first time using a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

    The three-year project will see the former monastic cellar turned into a new learning centre with teaching rooms, a reception area and a lift.

    Funding of £168,000 has been awarded to the cathedral by HLF to progress the project, in order to apply for a full grant of just over £1m "at a later date".

    A crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Walsall town centre could see fines handed out to anyone injecting drugs, drinking alcohol in the streets or urinating in public.

    The public spaces protection order has been brought in by Walsall Council and gives them powers to prosecute.

    People sleeping in doorways could also be fined £100.

    But the authority says it won't be used to target homeless people and other efforts are being made to support them.
