    Police are continuing to question a man following a four-hour siege at a bowling alley yesterday. It came to an end when armed officers stormed the building in Nuneaton.

    And a woman from Stafford who won gold at the British Transplant Games has met the family of the donor who saved her life.

    Sue Bennett had a liver transplant in 2008 and went on to win gold in the 1,500 and 800m track events and silver in the 50m freestyle and the 3km road race at this year's games. She's now given those medals to her donor's mother.

    A Warwick-based sexual abuse charity has said young people need to be taught to respect others "much earlier".

    Neil Henderson, CEO of Safeline,, external said the work the charity does with children in secondary schools is "just too late".

    "Lots of research shows that children are aware, if they're taught, about how to respect others," he said.

    "You can start to teach children how to respect people as early as one.

    "We work in secondary schools and already it's too late. It's just too late. We need to support young children much much earlier."

    The government has announced more than £5m will be spent upgrading roads in Warwickshire.

    Improvements will include:

    • A £2.8m upgrade for the A47 Hinckley Road in Nuneaton, particularly the Higham Lane junction and Eastboro Way roundabout.
    • Removal of the disused railway bridge on Hinckley Road which is often hit by tall vehicles.
    • £2.4m to increase capacity on the Birmingham Road in Stratford, the main northern route in and out of Stratford-upon-Avon which suffers badly from congestion.
    • An additional £1.1m from Warwickshire County Council to provide electronic signs for drivers and make better use of available highways land.

    A section of A518 Weston Road in Stafford is closed to allow for realignment work on the central reservation for the next week.

    The 11-mile diversion goes along the A513 Beaconside and A34 Stone Road and on to the A51 Weston before directing drivers to Uttoxeter.

    The section of road near the Staffordshire Police headquarters, external will be closed until Sunday 29 October.

    The people of Nuneaton have been praised by Warwickshire's Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner following the bowling alley siege on Sunday.

    "These sorts of situations could easily end in tragedy without the bravery and professionalism of the police officers involved," said Rob Tromans.

    "I'd also like to commend the local community in Nuneaton for the spirit in which they rallied round and looked after each other while the situation unfolded."

    A 53-year-old was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill after a four-hour armed stand-off at the bowling alley.

    A takeaway driver has been robbed at knifepoint in Shrewsbury.

    Police say the victim was unhurt in the attack on Crewe Street in the early hours of Sunday, but that it had been a "distressing ordeal".

    A red cash box and a mobile phone were taken from the victim, before the offender ran off on foot.

    Officers are looking for a white man in his early 30s, 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall and of medium build, external.

    A reward of up to £1,000 is being offered for information relating to disorder in Birmingham city centre that left a man needing hospital treatment after he was attacked with a bottle.

    A 29-year-old man was punched in the face and hit with a bottle outside Nuvo bar in Brindley Place on 28 August, at about 03:30.

    It is believed the men pictured were all at Nuvo bar that night.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation after a TV builder from Kidderminster was cleared of assaulting two police officers.

    The IPCC has confirmed it is looking into a complaint made by Huntley Thawe, who was acquitted at Redditch Magistrates' Court following an incident with his wife in a McDonald's car park in Redditch.

    Birmingham City Council has launched a campaign against fly-tipping after there were 652 investigations into suspected commercial waste disposal offences last year, working out at 12 a week.

    New glow-in-the-dark posters will be put up in hot spots around the city in an attempt to tackle the problem.

    Tony Quigley, head of Birmingham City Council’s Waste Enforcement Unit, said: “Whether it is one bag of rubbish, a broken sofa or several tonnes of rubbish, fly-tipping is a blight and completely unacceptable.

    “We can and do prosecute when we have credible evidence. We will not hesitate to do this."
