    Military personnel can travel free on Chiltern Railways this Sunday.

    The operator says it's to allow current and past personnel to pay their respects at the many events held on the day.

    Services will also be held at Birmingham Moor Street and Leamington Spa on Monday and at London Marylebone on Saturday to remember railway staff lost in conflict.

    A man's been arrested after what police have called a "cannabis plantation" with a street value of £2.5m was found in a former garage. , external

    West Mercia Police says they discovered 2,800 plants on Monday being grown in the now-redundant Madeley MOT testing station on Ironbridge Road.

    The force says all the plans and equipment is now going to be destroyed, describing it as a "sophisticated" operation on an "industrial scale".

    The 27-year-old man, of no fixed abode, was arrested on suspicion of production or being concerned in the production of a Class B controlled drug and released under investigation.

    Staffordshire Police says the 17-year-old victim, who was assaulted on Boughey Road yesterday, near the junction with Ashford Street, is in a stable condition in hospital.

    They say the area is still cordoned off as they carry out forensic investigations.

    Plans to demolish the decommissioned power plant at Ironbridge have been approved by Shropshire Council. , external

    Despite some objections, the four cooling towers will also be removed.

    The power station stopped generating electricity in November 2015 and its owners, Uniper, put the 141-hectare site on the market in February.

    The firm says it hasn't yet appointed a demolition firm, but will let the local community know once it does.

    A man and a woman have been convicted of child sex offences at Warwick Crown Court.

    A 39-year-old man from Leamington Spa was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail for causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

    He will spend six years on licence and has been served with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until further notice.

    A 44-year-old woman from Rednall was convicted of making indecent photographs of a child.

    She was given a two-year community order and was also served with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until further notice.

  6. Fleet of cranes joins funeral processionpublished at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    A funeral procession in Walsall today will feature a fleet of cranes in a tribute to a 35-year-old with a passion for the vehicles.

    Ben Lawton, who died last week, spent about 20 years of his life visiting the yard of ABA Crane Hire in Bloxwich.

    In tribute to him, the firm wanted to say goodbye, so will have cranes in the funeral cortege and some of the drivers will be pallbearers.

    With a clear night, the Aurora Borealis was visible all over England and this photo, taken by a BBC Weather Watcher in Berrington, Shropshire, appears to show it on the horizon.

  8. 'Extraordinary escape' for man as railing goes through carpublished at 11:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2017

    A man has had an "extraordinary escape" after a metal railing went through the side of his car.

    It happened outside Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sikh Temple in Smethwick just after 19:30 last night.

    The ambulance service said on arrival, crews found the car had been badly damaged and had a metal railing through the driver's side door. A set of traffic lights had also been hit.

    An ambulance spokesperson said: "The 20-year-old man had suffered a leg injury where the metal work went through the car and struck his leg by the knee.

    "He was treated for abrasions to his lower right leg but did not appear to have any other injuries."

    The NHS trust that runs Worcestershire's main hospitals has revealed it has racked up a deficit of £29m in just six months., external

    The details have been revealed in the agenda for this week's board meeting of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, external, which is currently rated "inadequate" by inspectors.

    A report by the trust's Chief Finance Officer blames the deficit, which is for the first six months of this financial year, on not making planned savings and pressures on bed capacity and staff.

    It says the deficit is £5.5m worse than expected.

    The report adds that, if the situation continues, the organisation will have to look at borrowing millions more from the national body, NHS Improvement.

    National Express in Coventry is investigating what caused a double-decker bus to catch fire during rush-hour last night on Keresley Road.

    The Number 16 service was affected.

    All passengers got off the bus safely and there were no injuries.

    Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale has been suspended from West Midlands Police concerning an offence under the Official Secrets Act.

    He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 7 December.

    It relates to a Metropolitan Police investigation into the alleged failure to safeguard sensitive documents after items were stolen from an unmarked police car in May.

    West Midlands Police said a number of personal belongings were taken during the theft, along with a locked box containing documents relating to police matters.

    Due to the nature of the documents lost, the Metropolitan Police Service was asked by West Midlands Police to undertake an independent investigation.

    A 19-year-old man has been convicted of trying to buy explosives on the dark web - a network of hidden websites.

    Gurtej Randhawa had a package delivered in May which he thought was a remote-detonated explosive device, designed to be used on a vehicle.

    The National Crime Agency replaced the package with an inert dummy device before it was delivered, his trial heard.

    Randhawa of Grove Lane, Wightwick, Wolverhampton pleaded guilty yesterday to attempting to import explosives and was found guilty of maliciously possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury.

    He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced in January.

    A young boy has suffered injuries to his face in a two-car crash on the outskirts of Hereford. , external

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says it was called at 08:18 to the B4399 and there were three adults and three children in the vehicles.

    Ambulance crews say the young boy was taken to hospital along with a man, thought to be in his 30s.

    Paramedics say a man in his 70s in the other vehicle was also taken to hospital complaining of chest pains, along with a woman in her 70s, who had minor injuries.
