    Police forces are urging the public to give up any guns under a two-week surrender starting today.

    Anyone handing over a firearm at their local police station during the fortnight will not face prosecution for illegal possession.

    Speaking at the launch in Birmingham, Assistant Chief Constable Helen McMillan, National Police Chiefs' Council lead for criminal use of firearms, said gun crime had risen in the past year and they wanted weapons out of harm's way.

    Work to conserve the world renowned Iron Bridge in Shropshire begins today.

    Dating back to 1779, the historic structure is under threat from cracking due to stresses in the ironwork.

    English Heritage described it as "one of the wonders of the modern world", a symbol of the Industrial Revolution and arguably the most important bridge ever built.

    The organisation is now launching its first ever crowd-funding campaign in a bid to raise £25,000 towards the overall £3.6m repair bill.
