    A sculptor, whose works are so small they can only be viewed through a microscope, is to receive an honorary degree from the University of Warwick.

    Artist Willard Wigan, born in Birmingham and now based in Wednesbury, will be recognised with a honorary doctor of letters for his sculptures that often sit within the eye of a needle or on a pin-head.

    His works include miniature versions of athlete Usain Bolt, a hummingbird and cartoon characters Pinocchio and Cinderella.

    The sculptor, who'll receive the degree at a ceremony in January, was awarded an MBE for services to art in 2007.

  2. Calls for new A&E centrepublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    There are renewed calls to build a new A&E centre somewhere between the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

    The option was considered years ago by the Future Fit team, in charge of reorganising hospital services in Shropshire, but was found to be the most expensive on the table.

    The leader of the opposition Tory group on Telford and Wrekin Council has written to local MPs and councillors for their support.

    Andrew Eade has spoken out as NHS England look at plans to house the centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, with urgent care centres in both Shrewsbury and Telford.

    The smallest school in Herefordshire is being threatened with closure.

    Only 20 pupils now attend St Weonards Primary, a school which once had more 120 children on the register.

    Herefordshire Council says falling numbers have left the headteacher and governors unable to set a realistic budget and they're now consulting with parents on the school's future.

    Three crashes involving 10 vehicles have taken place in Staffordshire this morning and police are remind drivers to stay alert.

    Three cars were involved in a collision on the M6 southbound between junctions 15-14 and three other cars crashed northbound near Keele services. Paramedics have attended to both scenes and treated drivers for injuries.

    A number of cars were also involved in a crash near the Bet365 stadium on the A50 at Sideway.

  5. Police urge cyclists to 'be seen'published at 10:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    Police in Warwickshire are urging cyclists to "be safe and be seen" this winter as part of a road safety campaign.

    Officers will be stopping cyclists who aren’t visible on the roads, because they are wearing dark clothing or have no lights.

    They'll be giving out safety advice and high-vis gear in a bid to help reduce the number of collisions and raise awareness.

    The moment a lorry travelling at 43 mph hits stationary traffic on the M6 southbound near Birmingham.

    Mariusz Wlazlo, 47, from Liverpool was jailed for 16 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

    The lorry was full of goods when it hit two cars between junction 8-6, near Great Barr in March this year.

    The female driver of the first car to be hit by the lorry was treated in hospital for several weeks for broken ribs and fractured vertebrae.

  7. Poundland launches Wrekin-inspired chocolate barpublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    A chocolate bar modelled on the Wrekin in Shropshire goes on sale today.

    Poundland, based in the West Midlands, had been in a legal row with the makers of Toblerone, who claimed the design of the Twin Peaks bar was too similar to its product.

    The two firms have now reached a deal and Poundland's packaging for its Twin Peaks bar even boasts of its inspiration - the Wrekin and Ercall hills, not the David Lynch TV series.

    Manufactured in the West Midlands, the retailer said it had decided to launch its bar after Toblerone dropped the weight of its bar to 150g and a bit of banter in the office led to the Wrekin.

  8. Body pulled out of River Severnpublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    A body has been pulled out of the River Severn in Shrewsbury.

    An underwater search was carried out after reports of a man going in the river in Castlefields on Saturday.

    Formal identification is currently taking place and police are appealing for witnesses.

  9. Watch: Lorry crashes after driver 'asleep at the wheel'published at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    Footage has been released of the moment a lorry driver travelling at 43mph crashed into stationary cars on the M6 .

    The 47-year-old driver, from Liverpool, told police at the scene, "I think I went to sleep for a moment".

  10. Girl seriously hurt in car crashpublished at 09:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

    A 12-year-old girl has been seriously hurt in a car crash in Walsall.

    She was taken to hospital with head injuries after the car she was travelling in, left the Lichfield Road and hit a stationary vehicle early yesterday morning.

    Two others in the car sustained minor injuries and the driver, a 41-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

    Illegal parking in Birmingham is being targeted as part of a police crackdown.

    It follows complaints from pedestrians about pavements being completely blocked – in one case a car was even parked in a bus shelter.

    A man's been arrested after a grenade was discovered at a house in Longton, Staffordshire.

    Blurton Road was cordoned off , externaland nearby homes were evacuated at about 10:00 yesterday.

    The object has been removed and officers are continuing their investigation, police say.

    Police are investigating a death in a house fire in Bridgnorth, Shropshire at the weekend.

    Fire crews were called to a property on Cricket Meadow at about 08:30 yesterday.

    The fire had burnt itself out, but a person was found dead inside the property.

    At this time, the fire isn't thought to be suspicious.
