    "There's a great deal of energy, enthusiasm and vibrancy" in Coventry, said Arts Minister, John Glen on a trip to the city.

    He said the bidding process to become UK City of Culture had been "long and tough" but "Coventry have come out the winners and I'm thrilled to be here to celebrate".

    "There are some funds available.. from the Heritage Lottery Fund", he said, "but what we've seen in Hull is that it has an enormous effect in terms of the momentum around business and investment in the city".

    The number of schools closed in the West Midlands due to snow has now passed 350.

    Shropshire has the most with more than 100 shut by 12:30 while there are more than 50 closed in Worcestershire, Sandwell, Dudley and 49 in Birmingham.

    A lot of the schools affected have decided to close early ahead of the weekend due to the snow.

    A 12-year-old girl is in hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Solihull, police say., external

    Hobs Moat Road was closed at the Old Lode Lane junction for around three and a half hours after the incident, just before 15:50 yesterday.

    The driver remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries, West Midlands Police said.

    There are more than 400 homes and businesses without power this afternoon across the West Midlands. , external

    Western Power Distribution says the largest numbers are 164 in Brown Edge, Staffordshire, 122 in two parts of Coventry and 95 in the Ironbridge area of Shropshire.

    The firm says it's working to get their power back on this afternoon.

  10. Companies named and shamed for underpaying staffpublished at 12:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2017

    From reindeer to Wolves.

    Businesses across the West Midlands, including Wolverhampton Wanderers football club, have had to pay thousands of pounds back to staff for paying them below the minimum wage.

    The 27 firms have been named and shamed on the government's list.

    The football club failed to pay £450.79 to 17 workers.

    The five worst offenders in the West Midlands:

    1. The Best Connection Group Limited, Bromsgrove B61, failed to pay £469,273.83 to 2,558 workers.

    2. Mrs Hardeep Sodhi and Mrs Salma Choudhary trading as Cape Hill Solicitors, Sandwell B66, failed to pay £7,917.22 to 1 worker.

    3. Shield On-Site Services Ltd, Herefordshire HR9, failed to pay £3,912.24 to 1 worker.

    4. The Bear & Pheasant Limited, Stafford ST17, failed to pay £2,975.25 to 1 worker.

    5. Mr Ryan Edge trading as Francis and Ashley Hairdressing (previous owner), Dudley DY8, failed to pay £2,196.33 to 1 worker.

    TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said minimum wage dodging had "reached chronic levels in shops, salons and hospitality" and urged the government to focus on these sectors.

    More than 300 schools in the West Midlands have fully or partially closed today because of the wintry weather.

    Snow's been falling in many places since later night.

    The worst affected places in terms of school closures have been Shropshire, external, Birmingham, external, Dudley, external, Sandwell, external and Worcestershire, external.

    All of those places have nearly or more than 50 schools closed today although there are some closures in Stoke-on-Trent,, externalStaffordshire, external, Wolverhampton, external and Warwickshire, external as well.

    Volunteers are being called on to help clear AFC Telford United's ground of snow and ice tomorrow.

    They tweeted to say, external they're going to start at 09:00 ahead of their match against York City.

    Bin collections in Shropshire are being affected by the snow which is continuing to fall across the county.

    Both Telford and Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council say they will collect as much rubbish as they can, but are advising people to bring their recycling boxes back into the house, in case someone trips over them.

    There have been hundreds of bumps and crashes on the slippery roads around the West Midlands this morning.

    But so far West Midlands Ambulance Service says it hasn't had to deal with anything really serious.

    Snow is continuing to fall around the region though and the emergency services are urging people to drive carefully and only go out if they really have to.
