    For many people across the West Midlands, tomorrow marks the start of the annual Christmas getaway, as people move around the country to be ready for Christmas Day.

    To try and help, Highways England says it's lifting or finishing almost 400 miles of roadworks by tomorrow morning, external including on the A446 Stonebridge Road near Coleshill.

    However, several are staying in place as the organisation says they'll be too dangerous to remove, including:

    • M6 Junction 16 (Crewe) to 19 (Knutsford) - Motorway upgrade - 20 miles
    • M6 Junction 8 (West Bromwich) to M5 Junction 3 (near Oldbury) - Structural repairs with speed limits - 7 miles

    The majority of the money to host the Commonwealth Games will be coming directly from government, according to mayor Andy Street, who said it would mean a "huge government pay into the region".

    The games are set to cost £750m, making it the most expensive event since London 2012.

    Mr Street said remaining funds would come "from a number of sources", but admitted "we don't know the final budget yet".

    "We will see dramatic regeneration" of the city, with both the extended Alexander stadium and the athlete's village located in the Perry Barr area of the city," he said.

    "The economic case for this is overwhelming", Mr Street said, with "new transport being provided as well as new construction jobs.

    "But we will have to raise some additional new cash".

    The Genting Arena would host badminton, and Arena Birmingham the artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. Both have a 9,000-capacity.

    Villa Park, the famous stadium of former Champions of Europe Aston Villa, will host rugby sevens.

    The Symphony Hall, opened by The Queen in 1991 and home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, will host weightlifting and para-powerlifting.

    Three halls at the NEC will also be used, meaning most of the venues needed to host the games are already in place.

    A new aquatics centre will be built in Sandwell.

    Track cycling will be held in London, says the leader of Birmingham City Council Ian Ward.

    He said the short lead-in for the games means they need the existing capacity the capital can offer.

    He also confirmed there will be no shooting in the competition, which is on the Commonwealth Games Federation's (CGF) list of optional sports.

    Staple Lodge Road in Northfield, Birmingham is closed in both directions after an 18-year-old man was found with stab injuries to his chest and leg.

    He's in a critical but stable condition, police say, after the stabbing which happened at about 20:30 last night.

    Officers say they believe it was a targeted attack, and there was no danger to other members of the community.

    The road remains closed for forensic examinations to continue.

    Culture Secretary Karen Bradley says Birmingham will put on a “brilliant Games that will showcase the best of Britain to the world and make the entire country proud”.

    Making the announcement, Commonwealth Games President Louise Martin told pupils at a Birmingham school assembly the games would "celebrate diversity, create opportunities and drive business links".

    "We want this to be a brand new chapter in Birmingham's history, and we want you to be part of that," she said.

    As part of its bid to host the Commonweath Games Birmingham has proposed to create the UK's largest permanent athletics stadium, supplemented by four indoor arenas.

    The Alexander Stadium, used by US athletes ahead of London 2012 Olympics, could see its capacity increase to 50,000, with a permanent capacity of 25,000.

    As well as hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, it would be the athletics venue for the games.

    Its proposed 25,000 seating plan would match that of Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
