    New firearms, dogs and "behaviour detection" units are to be created in the city and also Manchester.

    BTP assistant chief constable Alun Thomas said: "Although our firearms units are currently based in London, they have been regularly patrolling trains and stations in places such as Manchester and Birmingham since early this year."

    The force, which launched a recruitment drive for officers to fill the newly created hubs in August, said the measure was not being taken in response to any direct threat to the rail network.

    A prolific crossword writer has retired at the age of 85 and seen his final puzzle published in The Telegraph.

    Roger Squires from Ironbridge started compiling them in 1963 and the former magician holds a number of world records, including one for the "most crosswords written in a lifetime".

    The Shropshire man has had more than 77,000 published and written more than 2.3m clues, including one which holds the record for producing the longest answer - the Welsh village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

    He says he now plans to concentrate on travelling and "enjoying myself".

    Police say a man who stole mobile phones from gig-goers was able to snatch more than 50 by turning himself into a human "deposit box" thanks to a special, full-length swimsuit.

    The government is coming under pressure to issue more guidance to mothers who are exchanging breast milk for free outside of NHS supervision.

    There are fears that the unregulated practice could spread infection and viruses such as HIV and hepatitis.

    Dr Gemma Holder, a consultant neonatologist at Birmingham Women's Hospital, is concerned mums who exchange milk without medical supervision might risk their babies' health.

    But some mothers taking part in the practice argue they are making an informed choice.

    Each has a note attached with a Christmas wish inviting whoever finds it to take it home.

    A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a man was hit by a car which failed to stop in Stourbridge, police say., external

    Officers were called to the incident on Amblecote High Street on Saturday 16 December at about 05:25.

    The 37-year-old died at the scene.

    The arrested man has been released pending further investigations.

    Volunteers at a homelessness support project say they are "absolutely devastated" by the loss of a man who died in freezing temperatures in Birmingham.

    He has been named by friends as Paul Williams, 38, who died after bedding down near the Bullring shopping centre.

    The ambulance service confirmed it was called to St Martin's Church, Edgbaston Street at 09:30 on Sunday, where the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

  13. Birmingham crash: More victims namedpublished at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2017

    More victims of the multi-car crash in Birmingham on Sunday that left six people dead have been named.

    Kasar Jehangir, 25, is thought to have been travelling in an Audi with Mohammed Fasha, 30, and Tauqeer Hussain, 26, both of whom were named by their families yesterday.

    A fourth man in the car, aged 22, was seriously injured.

    Three men in the Audi, including Mohammed Fasha, 30, pictured with his baby nephew, and Tauqeer Hussain, 26, known as Tox to his family, died at the scene.

    Their vehicle hit a taxi driven by Imtiaz Mohammed, 33, who died along with two passengers, a man aged 42 and a woman aged 43.

    It is understood Mr Jehangir, Mr Fasha and Mr Hussain were thrown from the Audi, thought to be a powerful S3 model, in the pile-up on Belgrave Middleway.
