    People living on a road in Sutton Coldfield have now returned to their homes, engineers say, after a gas leak earlier.

    Walmley Road was shut so gas firm Cadent could repair the gas main on the route.

    It says the road's due to reopen this evening.

    A man's been praised for his bravery and quick instincts after he waded into a lake to rescue what he thought was a lifeless baby.

    James Dowley, 28, from Welshampton, found he'd actually gone to the aid of a life-sized doll at Ellesmere.

    Mr Dowley wrote on Facebook the figure looked "life-like" and he could not go home without checking on its welfare.

    But, while praising him, the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) said it advised people to refrain from entering "cold and unfamiliar" water.

    The funeral of the former West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City and Aston Villa striker Cyrille Regis will be held at the end of this month.

    A bird flu prevention zone was declared across the whole of England yesterday after 13 wild birds were found dead there.

    It follows the discovery of the strain in wild birds in Dorset, where a total of 31 infected birds were identified.

    Herefordshire Council is urging anyone with poultry or captive birds to take measures to keep them separate from wild birds and step up their biosecurity.

    More problems in the snow-damaged roof at a hospital's Midwife Led Unit mean it is being temporarily relocated, health bosses say, external.

    In December, birthing and inpatient care were suspended when heavy snow took a toll on the Copthorne Building, external - the MLU's base at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

    Now NHS bosses say builders have found further issues with the roof and, to allow a full repair, services - including antenatal clinics and scanning - will be temporarily delivered from the vacant Ward 20 elsewhere in the building.

    The trust running the hospital has not said when the MLU will be able to run again in its former capacity, but expects the relocation to happen before the end of January.

  10. Footbridge inspection reveals loose bolts and slack cablespublished at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Bolts meant to be holding together a footbridge high above a busy road in Bridgnorth have lifted out of the ground, Shropshire Council says.

    The authority isn't sure what has caused the damage, which is worse than it thought, but says the problem might have emerged over a number of years.

    The bolts, on the end of the bridge nearest the town park, are supposed to hold the walkway in position and prevent it from moving excessively.

    Following an inspection, council engineers say they have come up with a solution to make it safe.

    Temporary repairs should have it ready for use by February half term, ahead of a bigger repair job later in the year, which will include work to tighten support cables that have become slack.

    The bridge connects the town centre with the Severn Valley Railway station.

    A driver's been jailed by judges at the Court of Appeal after they ruled his original sentence was "lenient".

    Stephen Whilde, 24, of Market Drayton, was speeding round a bend on the A529 between Audlem and Market Drayton in 2016 when he lost control.

    The car came off the road and hit a fence, leaving his best friend and passenger Will Bye, 24, with fatal injuries.

    Whilde had admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was given a two-year suspended sentence and a five-year driving ban last year at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

    But, after the Solicitor General argued it was wrong to spare him jail, the Court of Appeal judges jailed him for three years and reduced his driving ban to four-and-a-half-years.

    Telecoms giant BT says it doesn't plan to remove a phone box in Stoke-on-Trent which a local MP claims is used for drug dealing.

    Ruth Smeeth told the House of Commons the booth in Hanley is used to sell the synthetic drug Black Mamba.

    A BT spokesperson said: "In this particular case, we’ve been helping the local authorities deter anti-social behaviour and have already taken a number of steps to combat the problem at this phone box.

    "However, if we remove the phone box, the local community will be left without a service they clearly want. Anti-social behaviour is a matter for the police and we’re supporting the efforts of them and others to combat the issues.”

    The Staffordshire force says it's been told of drugs misuse involving the phone box and is working to tackle the problem.

    Coventry Bears Rugby League team are celebrating 20 years as a club with a historic game against the Super League Champions, Leeds Rhinos.

    A memorial dedicated to UK victims of terrorism overseas is going to be officially dedicated at the National Memorial Arboretum in May., external

    The sculpture, called Still Water, has been installed at the Staffordshire site and the government says it commemorates all UK citizens who have been killed in terrorist attacks overseas.

    A Shropshire festival won't be taking place this year.

    Ellesmere's Merefest, external, an event designed to "celebrate the wildlife and communities of the Meres and Mosses", has been cancelled because of a lack of funding.

    It was launched in 2013 as a free event, external and attracted 6,000 people in 2016, external, before visitors had to pay for tickets to last year's festival., external

    Organisers warned last September that the event was at risk because people weren't willing to pay to access a normally public space.

    They've now posted on Facebook to say that it won't be running in 2018 as "we just can't make the books balance".

    Fake tobacco with an estimated value of £15,000 has been seized by police.

    It follows a joint operation with Trading Standards, the fire service and Home Office Immigration Enforcement.

    Sniffer dogs found the tobacco at premises in Hereford and Leominster.

    Four people have been arrested.

    A school is highlighting the dangers of a new internet craze after confiscating detergent from a pupil.

    Tide is an American brand of laundry detergent that uses pods covered by plastic which dissolve in the washing machine.

    A craze, the Tide Pod challenge, in the US has seen people chewing or swallowing them and posting videos online, prompting YouTube to say it will remove videos of people taking part.

    Parents at St John's C of E Middle Academy, Bromsgrove have been asked this week by the school to be vigilant of their children trying to get involved in the challenge.
