    St James Church is opening to give people a chance to "reflect on the weekend's events, Rev Dave Bishop said.

    "We want to open the church to allow people a safe space, a chance to reflect and to remember Mylee.

    "There is a sense of sadness, disbelief and questions of why, how did this thing happen?"

    A 54-year-old man, believed to be the father of Mylee Billingham, has undergone surgery after being found with a stab wound to his stomach on Saturday.

    The man, thought to be Bill Billingham, remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

    "He is under sedation and has not been spoken to by officers yet", West Midlands Police said.

    A number of huge brewery vessels, similar to the ones pictured here, are to be escorted through the East Midlands.

    Police are escorting them from Swadlincote to junction 28 of the M1.

    The abnormal load will set off at 09:30 and will travel through Burton, Egginton, Littleover, Ripley and Alfreton.

    You are being advised to leave extra time if you are travelling to allow for some delays because of this convoy.

  6. Commonwealth Games: 'Heart of the UK'published at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    Birmingham's campaign to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games was based on it being the "heart of the UK" and "soul of the Commonwealth".

    The £750m showpiece is being billed as being the most expensive sports event in Britain since the London 2012 Olympics.

    Plans for the proposed £60m aquatic centre for Birmingham's 2022 Commonwealth Games will be considered by Sandwell Council then put to the Commonwealth Games Federation.

    Council leader Steve Eling said the games were going to be a "fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" for the West Midlands.

    “The eyes of the world will be on Sandwell and the benefits to the local economy will be huge with significant investment into the area and athletes and visitors from around the globe."

    The location for the planned aquatic centre for Birmingham's 2022 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled.

    The centre, with an Olympic-sized pool, will be built at Londonderry Playing Fields in Smethwick.

    It will also include a 25m diving pool and seating for up to 5,000 spectators.

    Officers are waiting to question a man, believed to be the father of Mylee Billingham, the eight-year-old girl stabbed to death on Saturday.

    The man, thought to be 54-year-old Bill Billingham, is critically ill in hospital with a stab wound to the stomach.

    He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident in Brownhills on Saturday evening.

    He is expected to undergo surgery and will be questioned in due course, a West Midlands Police spokesman said.

  11. Flood watch: More heavy rain expectedpublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    Flood warnings on the rivers Wye and Alne have been lifted but with more heavy rain expected water levels could remain high.

    Alerts remain on the Wye from Hereford to Ross and for the Lugg south of Leominister as well as the Leam and Itchen.

    The flood gates are closed at Waterside and New Street in Upton on Severn with flood alerts on both the Severn and the Avon.

    Hospital emergency departments in Worcestershire have been forced to divert more ambulances than anywhere else in the country so far this winter.

    The measures, aimed at relieving demand when no space is available, have been put into action 39 times in the last eight weeks.

    Figures from West Midlands Ambulance Service reveal call outs so far this month are already 8% higher than the same time last January.

    Paramedic Gemma Burgwin told BBC Hereford and Worcester rising demands on the NHS 111 non-emergency number and a lack of GP appointments are contributing to the increase.

    A private forensic search team will continue working with police officers in a bid to find missing mum Nicola Payne.

    The 18-year-old went missing while walking across wasteland near her parents' house in Coventry on 14 December 1991.

    The team of ex-military specialists has been using sonar and ground radar equipment around Coombe Country Park.

    "Searches at Coombe Lake are taking place as part of a review of work already done and are not in response to any new information," West Midlands Police said.
