  2. Judge to continue summing up Bennell evidencepublished at 07:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    The judge in the trial of the former Crewe coach Barry Bennell will continue to sum up the evidence for the jury today.

    He's talking them through 48 counts of historical sexual abuse, which the 64-year-old denies.

  3. Police force to review handling of hunt allegationspublished at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    There's going to be an in-depth review of the way Cheshire Constabulary deals with allegations of illegal fox hunting.

    The force is currently investigating two incidents where foxes were allegedly killed by hunts in the county since Boxing Day.

  4. Council to increase tax by at least 5%published at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    Council tax will be going up by at least 5% in the Warwickshire County Council area.

    The authority is looking to save £9m from its budget in the coming year and the move will add an extra £60 a year to the average Band D home.

  6. House fire shuts main roadpublished at 07:09 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

    A main road in Burslem is closed this morning as firefighters continue to deal with a large house fire.

    Emergency services were called to Hamil Road last night, following reports of what's described as an explosion at a property near to Port Vale Football Club.

  12. Footbridge reopens after repairspublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    Temporary works to repair a footbridge leading to Bridgnorth's Severn Valley Railway station have completed.

    The footbridge was closed to pedestrians at the start of January after safety concerns when staff noticed the end of the footbridge, on the station side, had lifted up significantly.

    Shropshire Council says contractor Ringway has now completed the temporary work so that the bridge could reopen before the February half-term holiday.

    Engineers from Kier will return in late October or early November 2018 to carry out permanent repairs.

    Bolts and supports had failed but Gurnek Singh, Shropshire Council’s interim bridges and structures manager, said the cause is still largely unknown.

    But it is thought that cold temperatures and de-icing salts "eating" away at the bolts could be among the reasons.

    Campaigners who fought hard to save Burslem Gymnastics Centre from closure say they're delighted and proud that it's now staying in the town.

    Almost 8000 people signed a petition against plans to move the gym across the city.

  14. Police talk to driver after woman hurt in crashpublished at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    A driver of a Mercedes car that hit and injured a woman is assisting police with their enquiries.

    The 51-year-old pedestrian - who suffered head injuries - is in a serious but stable condition in hospital following the crash.

    It happened at about 14:30 on Saturday on Warwick Road, Olton.

    West Midlands Police said the driver stopped at the scene and contacted emergency services.

    A man who stole thousands of pounds in cash and tobacco during five shop raids in three weeks has been jailed, external, police said, after officers linked him to a distinctive bicycle he used.

    The West Midlands force said Ryan Setchell threatened staff with hammers, crowbars and knives as he struck at shops, a hotel and a McDonald's restaurant in Coventry.

    The 30-year-old was charged with five counts of robbery and jailed for eight years at Warwick Crown Court.

    He will be subject to an extended four-year licence period upon release.

  16. Maternity services suspended due to sicknesspublished at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

    A hospital birthing unit is to close overnight because of staff sickness.

    Those booked to give birth at Bridgnorth Midwife-Led Unit in Shropshire will be able to give birth at another of the county's units or at the Consultant-Led Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

    The unit will close from 20.00 until 08.00 tomorrow morning.

    Mothers who were due to give birth in Bridgnorth are being contacted.

    In July, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Oswestry Midwife-Led Units closed for six months because of staff shortages.

    But the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the centres, said it had been able to recruit extra midwives, and they reopened in January.
