  4. Brexit platform carefully chosenpublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2018

    Trystan Jones
    BBC News Online

The Labour party tells me Coventry was chosen as a platform to set out its Brexit plans because of the region's strong backing for Leave at the referendum.

In fact the West Midlands had the highest vote share for Leave in the UK - 59.3% of voters.

Some critics claim the party's plan to remain in a customs union with the EU could tie the UK's hands on trade deals with other countries.

Labour says the Coventry announcement however will reaffirm the party's pledge to leave the EU.

Another reason for choosing Coventry, a Labour spokesperson says, is because of the challenge the UK faces in transforming the economy post-Brexit. A challenge Coventry is facing as it embraces new technologies with the decline of some traditional industries.
